Where can I find engine types for airliners?

Recommended Posts

With all the great new engine sounds being posted here in the library it would be nice to know what engine types are used on the airliners we fly. This way one could match up the correct sound with the engines. For example the Airbus 320 typically uses either IAE V2500 or a variation of the CFM engines depending on the specific airline. How would I find the type of engines used on Southwest's Boeing 737-700 series aircraft? I searched airliners.net but could not find what I needed. Maybe there is a better site. Thanks!Airbus

HiYep the A320 series use either the IAE V2500 or CFM 56-5A/B engines. (The IAE V2500 sounds uploaded to the avsim library recently over the the last week are very realistic!)The 737-700 series use the CFM 56-7 engines (either CFM56-7B20,7B22,7B24,7B26)Although I'm not sure exactly which ones Southwest use! Although they will sound pretty similar. For the 737NG series I recommend the soundpackage uploaded by Des Braban for FS2004http://library.avsim.net/search.php?Search...atID=fs2004sndsTheres 2 there - one for the PMDG 737, and one for any other 737NG model such as the Kittyhawk one.

I first check under the General section in the airfile. Quite often the engine type for that bird is listed. If it's not there, then I do a Google search for the aircraft in question and usually find the engine specs within the first couple hits. Armed with that info, I then seek out the best sound set match for the engine and stuff it in a special file outside of FS and alias it to the plane or where ever I wish. I've got a pretty complete inventory of all the sound sets available. I can mix them up to my hearts content and not screw up any planes.Sometimes a great set of sounds come with a plane and those are also stuffed in the sound folder for possible use later on.An unexpected benefit came with this decision. Sound files are virtually uncompressible, so take up a lot of room if you are storing planes off-line in zip files. With the sound files setting happily undisturbed outside of FS, the hangered planes take up much less space.-------------------Racartronit means something, but I just can't remember whatifdgsupport.jpg
