Over/Under Cruise Altitude Airbus

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I am new on this forum and I am 14. I had these questions for a team project! Thanks a lot to explain!

Ok let me explain myself with 4 examples, here are my waypoints:

AGOPA: FL180

LORNI: FL220

MOPAR: FL240

BANOX: FL260

ORNIX: FL280

VADEK: FL320 (CRUISE ALTITUDE)

MERUE: FL320

SOKMU: FL320

KEREX: FL320

ROUEN: FL320

1) Ok, so we are in an A320/A330 and are climbing. We are over waypoint LORNI at FL220 and we enter in the MCDU STEP CLIMB (not at all realistic) from FL220 to FL330/MERUE. So the plane will go directely to FL330 till MERUE (we have entered FL330 managed in the FCU) and will automatically set FL330 as our new cruise altitude and will change waypoints SOKMU, KEREX, ROUEN to FL330, am I right for question 1?

2) You are at MERUE FL320, you cruise altitude and you change manually the altitude of KEREX to FL330, the plane will automatically set FL330 as new cruise altitude (with FL330 managed selected in the FCU). The plane will automatically change altitude of waypoint ROUEN to FL330. Am I right for question 2?

3) You are at SOKMU FL320 and you enter manually in the FMS KEREX FL170, but leave ROUEN as FL320. The plane will not descend and will delete altitude constraint of KEREX FL170. Am I right for question 3?

4) You are at MERUE FL320 (cruise altitude) and you enter in the FMS FL170 at SOKMU but leave ROUEN and KEREX at FL320. You enter FL30 in the FCU. The plane will start descending. But will it consider SOKMU as TOD and will automatocally change the other waypoints? What will happen for question 4?

PS: And if possible but less important:

5) What is the use of HOT BUS? Does it only work when BATTERIES are OFF???

6) How do we charge the BATTERIES?

7) How do we charge the emergency generator?

Thanks a lot!

Kind regards,

AF330

Hi, a lot of this is from memory, may have to double check a few things in the FCOM/FTCM

1. Yes, once you have dialed in FL330 on the FCU and 'pushed' for Managed ALT, the FMGS will update with the new cruise altitude.  Failing that you can also just manually update the cruise alt through the MCDU

2. Again yes, the FMGS will update for you. Select V/S for a shallow step climb for comfort

3. That doesn't sound right :)  I will check that out. Am pretty sure  the FMGS will calculate TOD from your present position. FL170 will be your new ceiling until further calculated descent's.

4. Changing the Altitude in the FCU does nothing, You must either push for managed or pull for selected - The aircraft will do different  things depending on your choice.  Either way, once again I am fairly sure the FMGS will update KEREX and ROUEN to FL170

5. HOT BUS is always powered (that is the point!) unless you physically disconnect the batteries. If the battery is simply switched off, the HOT BUS remains powered.   It is basically powering certain items even if the aircraft is cold and dark.

6.  I suggest getting hold of an FCOM and looking here  --- FCOM 3.03.04  The system has a cutoff logic to prevent it from completely discharging

If BAT voltage 25.5, a charging cycle of 20 minutes is required.

– BAT 1 & 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .AUTO

– EXT PWR. . . . . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ON

Check on ECAM ELEC page, battery contactor closed and batteries charging.

After 20 minutes,

– BAT 1+2 . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . OFF

– BAT 1+2 Voltage . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Check above 25.5

7. On newer models the RAT feeds the EG. The RAT has a stall speed of 125 knots

Thanks a lot for your answers!

I just read a magazine, and found that during climb/descent, the VERT REV page doesn't show STEP CLIMB! And I also found out that if we enter any altitude in the FMS during our cruise (over or under) it will simply delete them till we pull or push the knob. And I think for question 4, that if you descend before TOD, it will just descend at 1000ft/min to find back the descend profile. If it finds the FL170, it's good but if we would have entered FL170 at a waypoint far ahead in our F-PLN, it would not have fInd it! It must be really surprising to see the FMS to change the ALT of all the waypoints! I know that the FMS never goes down and then goes up. It will plan a direct route and descend only once and respect the constraints. But I need to check this again!

Sounds good?

Of course, I really would like to have your opinion!

Kind regards,
