P3D v2.4 network tutorial somewhere...?

Featured Replies

I've got an old laptop and I am thinking about putting at least ASN and PFPX on it and maybe give the demo of EFB another try. For starters. ^_^ Now I've understood that I should share folders and I think I can do that and I also understood EFB comes with network support built in so I suppose setting that up should be quite easy. PFPX doesn't really need to be 'networked': it will only have to save files on the main P3D PC. However, ASN seems to be another story.

I've watched some YouTube vids about this but they are all about FSX and about the FSX SimConnect SDK. Now I was wondering if I need some P3D SDK...? And I suppose I need various SimConnect.msi's...? Here is where I start losing track (and hope ^_^ ) so I was wondering if someone knows about a tutorial online somewhere that tells me which files and installers I need exactly and how to get it all working. Does something like that exist already? As I said, it's mainly for ASN but maybe I will add some other addons in the future.

Afaik I don't have any addons that require FSUIPC (and WideFS) so a tutorial about SimConnect and P3D is what I need.

Any idea's?

I can't imagine I am the first one asking about this so sorry if this has all been explained before... if so, tell me where! ^_^

EDIT

P.S. I suddenly remember reading that someone here on this forum doesn't run ASN over the network because it performed better on the P3D PC... could that be true? If so, that would make things easier, of course... Still, maybe I will start using ProATC/X in the future and then I will require SimConnect anyway.

Jeroen - There is no benefit to ASN in running it networked. The only minor benefit is that it offloads the process to another system but, personally, I have always questioned the gain because you now have the system dealing with a network polling so you lose processing time there.

If you want the display on the networked system and the weather being injected, thereby giving you another screen - that's a benefit but ASN does NOT run any better OR worse networked. The functionality is included because some people want it that way.

Ok, thanks! Well, that makes life a lot simpler. ;) Then I can forget about SimConnect for now. I just read a few things in the ASN manual, amongst others that you need a very good connection with higher viewing distance settings and that already made me wonder if using ASN on a network was wise...

So now I will only test the laptop with the EFB demo and PFPX. Up to now I never had PFPX running with P3D at the same time but with PFPX on the laptop I can easily see the OFP without printing it and I can even change things 'on the fly' if needed, which I wouldn't do right now.

And btw I also plan to use the laptop for surfing the internet which I sometimes do during longer flights with P3D running in the background... which doesn't help performance, of course.

I have an old 7" tablet that I use to bring up approach plates online, etc. Very handy!

Yes, forgot to mention that but I will also use that laptop to search for and look at charts but also checklists and manuals, if needed. On my main PC I will only be flying and nothing else. It will only run P3D, TrackIR and ASN (and the EFB data provider for now). I did notice lately, specially when flying the Airbus 318, that performance went downhill a bit and so I am curious to see if ONLY having P3D onscreen and nothing else will help performance.

Did my first flight with OFP, charts and internet surfing on the laptop but it didn't make any difference to the performance of P3D. I suppose opening a browser on the same PC as P3D doesn't add much load on the CPU... ^_^

One reason for giving this a try is that P3D is struggling with the Airbus 318 lately. I think I will do a flight without ASN this evening because I've read a few times ASN doesn't work too well with that plane somehow. I also remember my first Airbus flight (without ASN) being pretty good so... I'll see if that makes a difference.
