May 26, 200521 yr I've been meaning to upgrade the default MSFS mesh for some time for Switzerland, where I prefer to do most of my non-US MSFS flights. I am curious if anyone can suggest some good freeware mesh for Switzerland. I've run across some a few years back, but I recall it created a "terrace" effect in the scenery. I would imagine it's evolved a bit by now. I'm most interested in mesh which recreates some of the more significant mountain landmarks, such as the Matterhorn, Jungfrau, and T
May 26, 200521 yr Here you go John:http://tinyurl.com/a6qzsI use it myself and the difference after the default terrain is PROFOUND. Take about 3 or 4 before/after screenshots to see the diff!Flights outta Innsbruck will never be the same. Very impressive. In fact all the mesh by Vincent van Veen is wicked!:)
May 27, 200521 yr I gave it a try. It certainly adds more detail to the area, but possibly due to the source of the data, there's a lot of distortion in areas like the area around Zermatt and Innsbruck. Other areas certainly look outstanding. What surprised me was the JUMP in fps over the MSFS default scenery. They jumped from about 25-30 out the cockpit, with autogen turned off to 35-40. I would think they would have dropped due to the increased resolution of the mesh.I am very curious now, what would happen if I tried to replace FS2004's mesh with FS2002. Anyone know what files I need to use for that type of experiment?-John
May 27, 200521 yr Commercial Member Hi John, all of the freeware mesh files for the European Alps are made from Shuttle Radar (SRTM) source data. In areas with lots of ice, large lakes, or steep valleys the radar signal didn't get reflected properly so the source data have lots of missing sections (voids) and spikes or holes. There are different methods of interpolation or filling those missing sections but neither will give you a correct Matterhorn or MtBlanc if it wasn't in the data in the first place. If you want consistent accuracy LAGO's TerraMesh is a good choice, or (for Austria and Switzerland, respectively) the mesh files that come with Austria Pro and Switzerland Pro. All of these were made from more traditional topographic source data.As for the FS2002 files: the default mesh files aren't any different than those for FS9. In fact, FS9 included a few new LOD9 mesh files. Steve Greenwood has lists for FS2002 and FS9 on his website: http://www.fs-traveler.com/resources-g.shtmlIt's a bit surprising that your performance increased with the higher-res mesh file. Terrain mesh doesn't have much of a performance impact to begin with but I never noticed an increase either when upping the resolution.Cheers, Holger
May 27, 200521 yr Thanks,Interesting--I visited Lago's URL, but it seems to be gone. The link you provided was very interesting, btw. I wonder if there's still some differences between the two sims meshes, since FS2002 has "Osama's tower" and FS2004 has the canyon near MO.-John
May 27, 200521 yr Commercial Member Hi John,Lago's mesh files are available (I believe) here: http://www.lagosim.com/default.asp?act=add...ng&gen=2&comp=0As for those glitches in the terrain: those are actually incorrect LWM flattens for either water or airfields, not the mesh files themselves. The FS9 design team introduced a slightly different code for LWM polygons and then re-compiled the entire planet. That lead to some of the old glitches disappearing but plenty of new ones showing up - our world is a big place ;-)Cheers, Holger
