i just got the Gtx 970 and ran the game with everything maxed at the fsdt klax with asn. And running msi afterburner the video memory was only at 900 mb. I was thinking it would be way higher? I also have an i7 930 OCed to 4.0 and 12 gb of ram

No shouldn't necessarily be higher. I've yet to see my 680 reach 1Gb of memory usage even at 100% GPU usage.

Most of the time my FSX uses less than 1 GB VRAM. But, depending on addons and graphics settings, 1 GB can be exceeded. Anyone with 2 GB VRAM should be fine, though.

Having said the above I've just completed two flights where my max VRAM got to 978Mb & 1007Mb, this was mostly due to flying through clouds / snow, a similar flight with weather disabled used a max of 793Mb. So as Olli says, just under 1Gb could be considered normal.
