Chimney smoke

Featured Replies

Recently I purchased the Aerosoft Manhattan scenery which is terrific but probably the biggest boost in realism in my mind is the addition of smoke emanating from the smoke stacks. It is a very cool effect which brings a city to life and also provides a quick check of wind direction and speed. Has anyone tried to add smoke to the default chimneys in FS9? ThanksDavid

I remember someone did it to the chicago smoke towers in fs2002....all you need is the effects sdk to place smoke effects at the coordinates and altitude of the smoke tower tops...

Hello David,I believe that the default chimneys all have smoke:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/118983.jpgNot sure if there is some scenery setting that makes the smoke appear, though. Perhaps one needs to have effects turned on.Al Wheeler added smoke to New York City chimneys for FS 2002: nycsmoke.zip in the AvSim library.Best regards.Luis

Hi Luis,Thanks for the reply and the great screenshot. Odd, though, because I have special effects all the way up but no smoke from my chimneys. I will have to experiment a bit. Are you sure your pic is from default scenery? There seems to be a lot going on in the background. Thanks againDavid

Hello David,That image is from my re-make of Gibraltar, a work in progress.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/119026.jpgIt covers the entire Bay of Algeciras, and is being used as a test-bed for a small project - at the moment, I am going through all of the default objects and taking pictures of them. The default chimney has both a beacon and smoke effect, and seems to be always placed by the FS Team with a Scenery Complexity of Sparse, so it will always be visible.Interesting that you do not have smoke. I shall have to take a look at New York's chimneys to confirm or infirm.Best regards.Luis

Well, David, you are absolutely right. Here are some images of stacks on the Brooklyn side:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/119084.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/119085.jpgIt seems that not all the stacks display the smoke effect. Very strange, as I have taken a look at all (!) the default objects and there is only one stack, and it has smoke. This certainly merits further investigation. Thanks for pointing it out.Best regards.Luis

Thanks for looking into this, Luis. I suppose in the real world not all smoke stacks churn out smoke 24/7 but most of the ones in the sim, IMO, don't smoke at all.David

Hi,Most default large factory building emit smoke randomly. Sometimes no smoke, sometimes all stacks smoking, sometimes only one or two. Try accelerating time (4x) or restarting FS and see if you get a different pattern.Hope this helps,--Tom GibsonCal Classic Propliner Page: http://www.calclassic.comFreeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.comDrop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___
