June 24, 200520 yr Assuming 150 knots in terminal area, (and 15 deg. flaps), would you gradually lose speed, so you don't have too much to give away (at once) when you intercept glideslope?.......I'm assuming dropping of gear at GS intercept would be normal way of losing some speed. Thanks in advance for any info, Bill. btw: PC-12 is FlightOne's.
June 24, 200520 yr Generally, flaps are used to increase ift, not reduce speed. Use speedbrakes to reduce speed, or if not fitted (as in the PC-12), use power reduction and gear extension FIRST, then drop flaps. From memory I drop gear at about 170, with about 12-18% torque, that results in a speed drop below 150, at which point deploy first stage flap, this drops the speed still further until 30 or even 40 flaps. For a high speed approach simply don't drop the gear until later. But the aim is always a stabilised approach before acquiring the glideslope unless you're doing short field or obstacle avoidance approaches. On the PC-12 it's a big slippery chap, so you may need to chop the power right off and even raise the nose to bleed speed quickly.Hope this helps.Allcott
