New CPU or GFX card?

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I have a decent spec PC for FS9 and my addons. I have acquired a new Apple Thunderbolt display and setting FS9 to full resolution, results in low FPS. So, instead of reverting down to a smaller resolution or a smaller screen at the same small resolution, I thought a new processor and/or graphics card wold be suffice?

I own an ASUSTek Leonite Motherboard with a Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe (Socket 775 LGA) at 1.86GHz. I don't want to overclock as the motherboard is restricted by Compaq's flashed BIOS..? I also own a NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT and 4GB of System RAM.

I have seen some Socket 775 LGA CPUs on eBay, in some instances double the frequency!

In order to use the new screen, using FS9 at a higher resolution, what PC part should I replace?

TIA.

What's the display resolution? If it's above 1280x720, this is one of the few cases where you might actually be GPU bound, not CPU bound. A 1.8Ghz conroe is pretty old but should still be plenty for FS9.

Cheers!

If your BIOS is locked down you may be restricted as to what upgrade options are open to you especially in terms of CPU support. Your best course before spending any money would be to confirm with HP/Compaq what CPUs are supported by your system and if you need to or are able to flash the BIOS with a newer less restrictive version. Asus may have manufactured bespoke motherboards for Compaq which is why I suggest you check with them first.

Your other option if you're looking at second hand parts would be to find an affordable motherboard/CPU/cooler/memory bundle from someone who has just upgraded.

I use FS9 at 1280*800 and can get between 18 to 25FPS. Changed it to 1920*1200 and I can get 15FPS or so...

I will look into the suggestion regarding a combo deal for motherboard, cpu etc...

If your FPS is going down linearly with resolution, you're pretty much GPU bound.
