Halo around runway lights

Featured Replies

I recently did a clean re-install of FS2004 and the first thing I have noticed at nightime is the "halo" effect around runway lights.I don't remember it being that way before the re-install so think I probably had "tweaked" them somehow. I remember them being relatively "clean" as you made an approach or taxied down the runway.Of course I don't know how I might have done that and don't seem to find a program/utility online for such a purpose.Does this ring a bell with anyone? (Or do I just have a bad memory)Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

Hey David,I did a clean install too after a looong time, and the halo (haziness) around the lights struck me as something different. Addons like Chris Willis's FS SkyWorld and later Active Environment (ASV) had meddled with the runway lights. At one point I'd tried Airport Environment Update v7 and the halo.bmp file from this package made the lights look big and blurry. So, if you like big and hazy lights, use the halo.bmp from AEU v7. Don't bother with the rest of the AEU textures as they're too heavy for most systems.Cheers,Keith

What I am hoping to do is get away from the haziness - but thanks for the input.

Hi,firstly, I know what you mean, but, I have found that this HALO looks fantastic, and makes changes that look good on the airport app,VASI lights, and you're aircraft lights too, then, add the following to you're FS9 config file to finish off the look, experiment with the numbers to get the look and feel that you are happy with,[DISPLAY]UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=0TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400RUNWAY_LIGHTS_SURFACE_SCALAR=1.0 //scales edge, center, end, touchdown, runways RUNWAY_LIGHTS_VASI_SCALAR=0.9 // scales VASI lights)RUNWAY_LIGHTS_APPROACH_SCALAR=1.25 // scales approach light barsRUNWAY_LIGHTS_STROBE_SCALAR=1.25 //scales RAILs and ODALs)let us know how you get on.

There is a flle called halo.bmp in your FS9/Texture folder. You can download many different halo.bmp files from here in the Avsim library and experiment until you find the one that suits you.I just currently changed to one contained in the file rlights.zip here in the library. It makes the lights very clear and sharp and bright. http://library.avsim.net/download.php?DLID=35731Jim

Thanks - I will give it a try.

That did the trick - An excellent replacement - makes the lights crisp and clear - day or night! Many thanks!

When I mentioned runway light halos, the Flight Sturgeon gave me specs. It was all down hill after that.
