Status of AVSIM Maintenance Project

AVSIM Community,

The Board of Directors and the Allensworth Family thank you for your patience and support as we work diligently on replacing aging equipment and upgrading our infrastructure.  Our goal is to provide the best experience to you and this has been a journey with some bumps along the way.  We have a total of 4 phases.

Phase 1:  On Monday, July 20, 2015, maintenance was performed with minor interruptions.  COMPLETE

Phase 2:  On Tuesday, July 21, 2015, AVSIM experienced an outage until early morning hours of Saturday, July 25, 2015, due to aging hard drives and a relatively minor issue with the boot sequence which has since been corrected.

AVSIM's maintenance windows the past week were to prepare partitioned data on our hard drives to be transferred to a Storage Area Network (SAN), a Dell PowerVault MD3200i.  The PowerVault MD3200i is an Ethernet-based array designed for exceptional performance and flexibility for storage consolidation, with system scalability for unexpected business demands, optional data protection features for added security and a turbo mode for enhanced performance.

The SAN was determined to be the most efficient and cost effective way to replace aging drives across both of our servers (10 hard drives total between two servers).  We will continue to maintain frequent and reliable backups.  COMPLETE

Phase 3:  AVSIM will be undergoing scheduled maintenance with intermittent interruptions anticipated Saturday, July 25, 2015, between 1400Z - 1900Z.  Normalizing replaced hard drive, allowing back ups to run, installing forum updates, and installing SAN.

Phase 4:    Actual data transfer to the SAN is a remote process (and very time consuming).  The data transfer process is not expected to cause any interruptions in service as it's capable of being done while the site is live.

Visit our Facebook page for live updates during the maintenance!

Sincerely,

Chase
