July 28, 200520 yr Hey there,I'm experiencing ongoing problems with variation. For example, I'm lined up on RWY 02 (017) at NZCH, Christchurch New Zealand, and my ND is showing a heading of 040 degrees. That fits, seeing Variation is 23 degrees East at NZCH. I've recently purchased the PMDG 737NG, and loving the FMC. However, it seems to be following the 'real life' tracks, so entering a Woodend One depature (runway heading) results in the aircraft veering off to the left, and tracking to an imaginary beacon! I can only assume this is related to Magnetic Variation, and it seems to happen at any airport I visit. Any help would be greatly appreciated!Regards,[email protected]
July 28, 200520 yr Are you using FS9? The problem you're seeing can be caused in FS9 by scenery adds designed for FS2002 that were not specifically designed for FS9 compatibility. You mention a problem in NZ, and I've seen (and eliminated) problems there myself. The problem is not necessarily localized, I saw a heading shift in Alaska caused by an NZ scenery. Try disabling your various NZ sceneries, and/or all sceneries added recently especially if they don't specifically indicate FS9 compat, and see if that eliminates the offset. Then you can add them back in to find out which one is causing the problem. db
July 28, 200520 yr Hi James,I experienced that and found, in my case, that it was due to a single scenery (.bgl) file - I forget which one, it may even have been a default file - which I suspect became corrupted. Once I found it replacing it with a backed up version solved the problem. Weird. To search try deactivating half your scenery areas and see if the problem is still there. If it is you know it's in the half that are still active (if it isn't the problem is in the half you just de-activated) so de-activate half of them and so on until you find the culprit. Unfortunately you have to quit FS each time you do this :-(If you only have a few addons a complete re-install might be easier.Good luck. All the best,John
July 29, 200520 yr Does any know of a way to search all your sceneries and pump out what they are calling out for mag var?Is there a program which will run through all your sceneries and set them right? It would seem to me that this could be a biggy.Thomas
July 29, 200520 yr In the SceneryBaseWorld folder is a default file magdec.bglI've also found that individual airport .BGL files can cause the magnetic deviation to disappear worldwide. Also some texture files can cause this problem.I think I've heard of about six different packages / sceneries causing this problem over the past two years. The basic troubleshooting technique is the only way to find the issue on your computer. Deactivate the last scenery you installed - check the compass.Keep going back until you find the problem scenery - the look for exclude files - probably have a name with EXEC or EXCL or EX in the file name.As far as textures - during the RTW race I had to repair a computer and when I got back up in Iceland - my variation was gone.I moved my entire main texture folder to another location and copied the original textures from the CD - solved that issue.Never did find out which exact texture caused the problem - because I've returned most of those textures to my FS world and it hasn't returned. You might try temporarily setting the default textures back in your FS world.
July 29, 200520 yr Thanks everyone for all your help.Firstly, I am running FS9, and it would seem I have quite a few addon scenery files, and not to mention aircraft! I did as suggested, and removed any addon scenery areas, and what do you know? Problem solved! Out of interest, most of my addon files are New Zealand scenery, also scenery I have created using Airport for Windows (2002). Those files seem to be working again, but I suspect they may be slightly incompatible with FS9? I have gradually reintroduced the scenery areas one at a time, and as of yet haven't experienced the problem again.I'm now enjoying the full benefits of the navigation database in the PMDG 737NG! So thank you all again, I really appreciate your help! Hope I can be of some help in the future.Regards,[email protected]
