FSX Weather over mountains

Featured Replies

I flew Denver to Provo last night and had some control issues over the mountains.

Using default FSX weather, FSUIPC wind smoothing.

Somewhere over the mountains up at 32,000 ft the overspeed starts going off. I look down and sure enough its in the red. The FMC corrects but then speed dips about 30 below where it's set at. The plane has a hell of a time trying to get back up to speed.. but when it did it shoots past and back into the red.

I'm watching this going on and notice that the plane is yawing and the yaw damper is deflecting hard to maintain course. Back and forth... back and forth. Speed up and down.. up and down. Altitude solid at 32,000.

I cleared the weather and everything smoothes out.

Is this an FSX default weather issue? Is this a pmdg NGX issue? Is this a FSUIPC issue? Is this normal?

The speed indicator also isn't going up and down smooth, a lot of rhythmic jumping up and down by 1 knot. Also nearing the descent for some reason, the FMC was flipping back and forth between mach and knots, kicking the speed marker up and down on the tape. That all stopped once the decent started.

I plan on getting active sky for Christmas, will this fix everything?

Short answer? Yes.

What you're seeing is an FSX weather issue, and improperly configured wind smoothing. At the same time, if the shear were actually that bad, then you should change altitudes to avoid it or back your speed off to give yourself a buffer between you and the max to accommodate the shear.
