True.  I haven't seen anyone mention the LS button which is, obviously, very helpful since it shows where you are in relation to the LOC and GS before you begin the approach.  Definitely should turn than on while monitoring the FMA.  Question: will the aircraft begin GS descent while the FMA indicates LOC* or must it say LOC without the * before it will descend?

Information overload....maybe it's easier to fly a registered drone and have some fun!

 

Seriously, i will consider everything everyone has suggested and plan to work my way through all of it as soon as I can. Thank you all once again.

Oh, it's not that bad and it's fun!  What I did was pick a favorite airport and put the airplane on the runway, got it in start state, put in a rudimentary flight plan that basically took me from the runway to an initial approach fix on approach, set config 1 in the FMS and then saved the flight.  Whenever I wanted to practice flying ILSs, I just loaded that flight and woooosh!  If I wanted to do it again I just reloaded.  Easy peasy.  Tons of airports to do this on.
