April 29, 200620 yr I have a Starfighter F-107 that makes a screechy/whistly sound so I don't use. I read somewhere that the sound file can be replaced from another aircraft, so my question is How? Do I copy the sound folder of say, the Tornado, delete the F-104 sound folder & slip the new one in?Can it be as simple as that? If someone who knows will share the secret I will be a grateful, happy pilot again :-)I looked in the F-104's sound folder & saw Windows Media Player files so I know which 2 make the awful sound. Can I delete those to get by on?I'm learning as I go along but you have to ask!!Thanks,Terry.
April 30, 200620 yr > Do I copy the sound folder of say, the Tornado, delete the>F-104 sound folder & slip the new one in?You could do that. Aliasing the Tornado sounds to the Starfighter would be just as easy though and save HDD space. Just go to the sounds folder of the F-104, rename the sound.cfg to something like sound.cfg.original, create a new (empty) sound.cfg file and put the lines{fltsim}alias=folder_name_of_tornadosoundin there. The {} should actually be square brackets and of course folder_name_of_tornado should be the name of the Tornado folder in your FSAircraft directory tree.>I looked in the F-104's sound folder & saw Windows Media>Player files so I know which 2 make the awful sound. Can I>delete those to get by on?That's another thing you could do, although just renaming them will be the smarter option, so you can easily revert your change should you ever wish to do so.Of course in that case you should not create the aliasing sound.cfg described above.>I'm learning as I go along but you have to ask!!No, I don't have to ask. ;)Regards,http://www.bremmekamp.com/img/misc/avsim.jpg
April 30, 200620 yr The Starfighter did have that screechy howling sound, it was the nature of the engines. You could always tell it was a Starfighter by the sound of it before you saw it. The orginial CS F104 overdid the howl though and there was an update posted to their forums by a user that was used by most people, but I don't think the forums are up anymore, and I'm pretty sure that if they are all of the stuff (read valuable information) from their previous forums has been lost. But you may be using the Cloud 9 one, I don't know. billg
April 30, 200620 yr Thank you nem & panda.I have the Cap.Sim Starfighter, as it's the only one I've seen being new to FS, & I like the look of it & it reimnds me of my youth when I first saw it. I thought it was a nice bit of kit then but can't remember the sound! CS have overdone the wailing & I cannot get a response from them about changing it.I will tinker with the sound as this is the reason it stays in the hangar, so thanks for the tinkering info!!! I'll also have another look at the CS web-site.Cheers, Terry.
April 30, 200620 yr Terry,I've worked with F-104s a lot (air traffic controller) and I reckon the Capt Sim howl and whistle is about as close as it gets - I remember working in the runway caravan in Germany a long time ago now but the sound of the engine note change to the whistle and howl is exactly as I remember it.Kev
April 30, 200620 yr Canada, Germany, and the Netherlands (during squadron rotations and exercises) all operated 104s in Germany. They were great aircraft, mighty noise makers.
May 1, 200620 yr Thanks for all the above. I found the worst noise file & deleted it (recycle bin so I can use it again if I should ever want to) & it does sound better but still wierd. This tinkering is new to me so I am treading carefully so it is good to get help. I did ailiase the Tornado sound but it didn't sound right so I reverted to the original minus the delete. Now it sounds less of a banshee's wail I am using it in RCAF guise & have found out what a pig it is to land - 1 out of 6. Thank goodness for ejector seats!!! The stall speed seems to be around 155. No wonder it was called the Widow Maker :-( My thanks to you,Terry.
May 1, 200620 yr It's not just the speed but the angle of attack. The 104 had special flaps because of the small wing area but if you went too high nose up it would drop like a stone and no way to recover. It was a great aircraft but not very forgiving of mistakes. billg
May 1, 200620 yr ... And made a lot of holes in the ground! There was a saying, that if you want a starfighter in spare parts, just buy a piece of land in Germany and wait...BRGDSSven Sorensen, EKCH
May 1, 200620 yr billg,That was with the RAF - we had a lot of F104s visit us from Dutch, Belgian, German and Canadian air forces - use to have to practice engineering turn-rounds on other NATO aircraft. Held a Tactical Fighter Meet on our base on late '70s where we had masses of 104s taking part - must dig out some photos - they are boxed away in the attic somewhere - it was a long time ago. Funny story about the Tac Fighter Meet - all nationalities turned up with some great paint schemes on the aircraft and the Dutch contingent even had clogs painted up to look like the front end of F104s. The Canadians turned up with their standard olive drab camouflage scheme - saw all the other paint jobs so, on the first weekend off, took all their aircraft back to Lahr and painted the fins white wlth a huge red Maple leaf on them - looked good and certainly stood out when the TFM started again on Monday morning!K
May 1, 200620 yr All these memories are so interesting & thanks for posting them.I've popped in to say that I have now landed the F-104 3 times in a row at 200 IAS & flaps at TO. I even nipped across the Channel & landed in northen France. No holes in the ground :D I think this machine might be as much fun as the Tornado!
May 1, 200620 yr Here's an interesting shot of a low level flyby, presumably at an airshow, and obviously before they had height restrictions. http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/148437.jpgbillg
May 2, 200620 yr Thanks for the incredible snap. I remember as a kid, Nevile Duke at Farnborough screaming down the runway in a red Hawker Hunter just like this, but a bit higher! Minutes later, it seemed, the noise hit us!!My love affair with aeroplanes started then :-)
