Question about water

Featured Replies

Hi. I'm just getting into FS2k4 after a year or so away from it. I recently got the Megascenery for the Mid-Atlantic region, as i live about 10 miles west of KBWI. The scenery is really incredible, but i'm wondering about the water textures. All of the water is basically a sky blue color and does show reflections of tall coastal objects and stars, but is that really how FS2k4 renders water? I've attached a shot of downtown Baltimore as an example. At first i though Megascenery had something to do with it, but even water outside the Megascenery region is represented this way.Over the ocean, it can be close to impossible to distinguish between the sky and the water.I've tried changing the water detail setting, but that hasn't really changed much.Any advice?john

Best advice I can give ya is get Flight Environment from Flight1...it rocks and includes fantastic water effects, not to mention its cheap :-)

Maybe i will explore that, but i'd like to know whether this is related to a problem with FS2k4's config or the video driver. After some additional playing with water-detail settings, i can get some of the non-reflective blue water textures, but as i get closer to them, they change to the sky-blue reflective ones from the original shot. Then, if i crank up the water-effects all the way, the land and water textures go to this purple/green/black pattern (second attachment). The system i'm running on is,Win XP ProAMD64 x2 38001 GB RAMG-Force4 TI 4600 (128 MB)These effects are seen in Megascenery regions and in the default scenery regions.john

I think its time you get a new graphic card. There are some really cheap ones and lightyears better than 4600. Especially since you are running X2 3800, your gpu is only a huge bottleneck.

Did you install a water texture pack? There are several here in the library. That's what it looks like to me - either you installed one that doesn't match well or you need to install one because something else messed with the textures.

Set the water settings to the lowest possible setting. It would change the colo from sky blue to dark blue.I like the dark blue. (Ocean blues). All these addons for water gives you reflection etc..but they take away the dark ocean blue color which bothers me. So I still remain with the default water.Manny

Try downloading Peter Wilding's final freeware water texture set, available here at AVSIM with file name pwover15.zip. Peter went on to develop Flight Environment, and this file is a forerunner of that. It may solve the problem, and it looks great.Martin
