F-86 Sabre Flap Setting Revisions

Featured Replies

I decided to open a new thread for this change, since It's no longer related to the panel (where the initial discussion began). So shoot me! The following is the complete change, by F-86 and F-86A model. As usual, open the cfg file with Notepad, make the changes, click "save" to save. F-86 (Hard Wing) [Flaps.0] Change to span-outboard=0.500 extending-time=3.000 system_type=1 damaging-speed=260.000 blowout-speed=250.000 lift_scalar=0.700 drag_scalar=0.650 pitch_scalar=1.020 flaps-position.0= 0.000, 0.000 flaps-position.1= 10.000, 0.000 flaps-position.2= 30.000, 0.000 flaps-position.3= 45.000, 0.000 F-86A (Slats) [Flaps.0] Change to span-outboard=0.500 extending-time=3.000 system-type=1 damaging-speed=260.000 blowout-speed=250.000 lift_scalar=1.100 drag_scalar=0.550 pitch_scalar=1.020 flaps-position.0= 0.000, 0.000 flaps-position.1= 0.000, 0.000 flaps-position.2= 10.000, 0.000 flaps-position.3= 30.000, 0.000 flaps-position.4= 45.000, 0.000 [Flaps.1] Leading Edge Slats NO CHANGE REQUIRED End of cfg file changesTo the person who asked how, on the F-86A, 0 degrees flap could result in a 10 degree slat deploy, please note that by "flap" I mean "trailing edge flap"; therefore, when the first click of the flap selection is made, there is zero movement to the trailing edge flaps, but the leading edge slats deploy to their full 10 degree setting. You have the option, therefore, say on long final, of deploying only slats first to see how it helps your L/D before dropping the notches of trailing edge flap. I don't know what the real F-86 leading edge was designed to do, but in this model the slats will NOT move without being commanded.By the way, my 240-some a/c and I are on FS2002, so we're not "as real as it gets". If anyone has any questions about these changes, or if you have problems with them, please ask (or complain) and I'll try to help.Mistral2 CFI Glider

Thanks for your post and the answer to my question that was asked on the other thread.By the way, anyone know if the F86 has reverse thrust, or are the air brakes (spoilers) and differential braking the only methods of stopping the plane?I've been in the 'hard wing' version exclusively and use an approach speed of 160-180 and a touchdown speed of 140 + -. After TDN I cut power, apply the air brakes and use differential brakes after slowing to 100 and less. With the application of the slats on the "slat" version, I'll see what the approach and touchdown speeds now turn up to be unless someone already has determined this.

There was no reverse thrust on the F-86, so it was speed brakes, flaps (which at 45 degrees were pretty good brakes themselves) and wheel brakes. Flying both models, and at different fuel loads, reveals that this airplane does not want to land slow; about 140/150 minimum, or it will just stop flying and become agricultural. I try to come over the numbers at about 170, full flaps and put out the brakes as soon as the runway gets big, about 40/50 ft AGL. It'll drop in then pretty gently. To refine your technique, go to someplace like Edwards rwy 4/22, fly a pattern and watch instant replay in Tower view. Remember, if you bounce it you have to log two landings!mistral2 CFI Glider

The first line in the flaps section of the CFG reads "Type= 1" and first line in flaps section for the "slats" version reads "Type= 2". Should these lines stay or be removed? Also, please clarify: the "slat" version has or does not have flaps on the trailing edge of the wing? In the spot view I see only movement on the leading edge slats and none on the trailing edge of the wing. Thanks again.

That's correct, "type= 1" should remain the first entry under the heading "[Flaps]" for both the F-86 and F-86A. Let me know how it works for you.mistral2 CFI Glider

Thanks for the quick reply mistral2. I edited the original post and added a question regarding the slats and flaps.Seems like the "slat" version has automatic operating slats and electrically operated flaps. (See:http://www.boeing.com/history/bna/f86.htm)How do we operate both since on this model the slats are not automatic but manual?

Found the problem, the CFG was incorrect. The flaps 0 section was as the original with only two flap settings. Redoing that section with your change made the slats and flaps operable as described. Thanks again

The following should be the flap command and activation sequence for each F-86 model; F-86 click No.1 - flaps 10 click No.2 - flaps 30 click No.3 - flaps 45 F-86A click No.1 - slats 10 click No.2 - flaps 10 click No.3 - flaps 30 click No.4 - flaps 45I'm using the word "click" to indicate sequential selection of additional flap on your controller (On my stick I'm using a trigger switch for flaps which emits an audible click with each selection). If you wish, substitute the term position = click. Let me know how it works for you.mistral2 CFI Glider

Works fine. See my previous post as to what was the problem before. I use 2 buttons on the Wingman joystick for flaps, one for lowering and one for raising flaps. Thanks for asking
