Hello guys. Sorry if this has probably been answered before.

I recenly dusted off my copy of FSX, as well as all my aircrafts add-ons, after not using them for a very long time and i'm planning to make some changes in the FSX world (mainly in the scenery area, as I feel that the ground/terrain look very dated now).

I'm currently running a VAIO laptop with the following specs and was always getting steady 30fps (with traffic/AI sliders set to minimum and with some fsx.cfg/NVIDIA Inspector tweaks) with REX Overdrive (with no detailed HD clouds), PMDG 747/MD11 and no other complex scenery add-on:

CPU: Intel Core i7-2630QM (2.00 GHz / 2.90 GHz Turbo Boost, 4 core, 6 MB CACHE L3).
GRAPHICS: NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M 1 GB
HARD DISK: 1 TB SATA 7200 rpm (but i might change it with an SSD sometime in the near future)
RAM: 8 GB DDR3 1333 MHZ

I'm considering some ORBX products, mainly FTX Global, Vector and OpenLC Europe (as I will mostly fly inside the EU) to spice some things up. But i'm not sure how well they will run on my system, and if they will do have an impact on fps and VAS usage. I'm not planning to get any add-on airports, as i'm already satisfied with what FSX already offers, but I might get REX Airports if it's worth it and if it's not too heavy on the fps as well. On top of this, i'm also planning on getting the PMDG T7. And was wondering how well will it run with all the aforementioned add-ons.

So any suggestions guys? Does ORBX needs a load of CPU to run or will it run ok in my system? I know that Vector is a very resource-hungry add-on. But turning off all Vector options should make things run smooth (as I read), isn't it? What about OpenLC and Global?

Welcome to the Forums!

ORBX products will use as much of a system's resources as they are given!  The FTX Global BASE is just textures... just as the sim already comes with, only better.  They really are not resource intensive.  And ORBX's Landclass products are very good... not a heavy hit at all.  Vector can be cruel to any system... but it has a rather extensive Control Panel that allows for very good customization.  I can't offer insight on the T7... I'm a GA only flyer.  But I do know it to can be tweaked per the system.

Of course, FSX as well can be tweaked per the system.  And if you're willing to compromise on your settings, then you should be able to enjoy the add-ons you mentioned without much difficulty.  It's all about setting your sim and add-ons to perform well with your computer... and optimizing your computer to perform well with a demanding title like FSX and add-ons.

HTH and Have Fun!

Greg

Thank you very much for your help. :)

Yeah, i'm not looking forward to create stunning HD screenshots and YouTube videos, so I can definitely live with medium-low settings as long as my flights are smooth as butter. I can definitely live with that.

I don't care very much about AI traffic and complex airport sceneries. But some eye-candy stuff to enhance my Sim experience, such as good-quality sky textures and ground environment textures, definitely.

Unfortunately, at the moment, i'm very tight on the computer budget. So I can't afford a new rig at the moment. But with this pretty old rig I'm running also pretty-demanding games such as GTA V and Resident Evil 6 with high settings without any problems. Not to mention that it also runs 4K Blu-Ray discs and 3D videos (it's a 3D laptop) pretty well without any stutters. So FSX, I think, should also run well with ORBX and the T7, thanks to Nick's tweakings.

We'll see what the results will turn out like. ;)
