June 7, 200619 yr I have been flying with Ground Environment 2006 for a few days now and I am happy so far. Today I saw screen shots of Ultimate Terrain I really like the way it looks. After reading the info on Ultimate Terrain it looks like it offers different features then Ground Environment 2006. Has anyone used both of these programs? I would like your oppinion on each program. Which one is better for VFR flight. I mainly fly Airliners, but I just do touch and goes all day. I did a search, but could not find anyone with a comparison between the two programs. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.
June 7, 200619 yr I believe it's an apples to oranges comparison. While there may be some areas where they have similar features, UT's main purpose is to map roads, rivers and lakes to their real world counterparts, right down to freeway offramps and those hidden inlets we remember on our favorite lakeshore. I believe both add to the sim and both can improve VFR flight and compliment each other, but I don't have GE and only base that feeling on posts others have shared. I do have USA Roads, which preceded UT and it greatly enhances the sim even without lakes and water features. -John
June 7, 200619 yr Thanks for the info John. So I can use both programs at the same time? For some reason I cant access the Ultimate Terrain forum. Im sure they discuss weather or not the two programs can be used together. My main concern is that GE2006 lines up the autogen with roads in the sim. If UT adds real roads, then my autogen will no longer line up.
June 7, 200619 yr I was able to access the UT forum this time. It looks like both programs can be ran together and compliment each other. Looks like Im off to make another purchase!
June 7, 200619 yr Author >I was able to access the UT forum this time. It looks like>both programs can be ran together and compliment each other.>Looks like Im off to make another purchase! Two things you need to be aware about UT and GE. One is GE (As well as most if not all other texture replacement addons) include as part of many of their textures simulated road textures. Since UT overlays roads acurately on top of these, you end up with more roads in many places then there should be. For this reason many turn off the minor roads in UT and just use the simulated texture roads from GE,while the major roads are placed by UT. I myself prefer accuracy so I activate all UT roads. The other issue is since UT corrects all of FS's ground placements the 3D objects that sit on top of them will appear out of place (In fact they've been out of place all along, they just lined up with the inacurate FS9 default scenery). UT has options to prevent them from being placed in the water, but there is a 3d object replacement project that fixes many of them to be exactly where they should be, It's called I believe QLRP4UT. It is shareware, but I think the author if I remember right only asks $10. The latest version (2.00) includes fixes for both UT/USA and UT/Europe. In my opinion this is a must for UT.
