Integrated GPUs to be used for virus scanning

Featured Replies

Apparently Intel is looking at using the integrated GPU in their 6th/7th/8th gen CPUs to carry out antivirus scanning. They say that this should reduce the CPU load to as little as 2%. See: https://www.tweaktown.com/news/61583/intel-offloads-virus-scanning-gpus-lowers-cpu-usage/index.html

The only problem I see with this AV needs to be updated to the latest threats just like the O/S, would this mean you would somehow have to have an intel software programme running as well.

My reading of this is that you would just run code adapted by the antivirus developer to use the GPU processing power instead of the CPU.
