June 23, 200619 yr Has anyone tried/seen this thing with FS2004?http://www.3dvisor.com/Quite frankly, I think that if it works as advertised, it might be the ultimate accessory. I had a VR headset back in the early nineties, and it was really cool, but computers just didn't have the graphics to make it immersive. This would be like trackIR on steroids. This thing does 800x600 for each eye, which is good enough, and will have high framerates on my system. I just wonder how good the integration is.
June 23, 200619 yr I looked into systems like this about three years ago (maybe a little more than that) and the only thing out there at the time was built for military helicopter training and the visual unit cost over $20k and didn't include the tracking. Same resolution though... hmmm, wonder if it is the same company doing it for gaming use now? Neat stuff and worth keeping an eye on... no pun intended... OK, a little pun intended :-lol . June 23, 200619 yr Don't even bother. Speaking as a owner of a i-glasses HMD (same res as eMagine and a bit narrower in field of view), they are not worth the money for gaming. The main issue with the tech at this time is FOV and res. The FOV on eMagine is about 40 degrees diag. Too small for VR. For immersive VR, you need at the least 60 degree horizontal by 40 degree vertical. Now, some might say they will replace the lens. Well, unforturnally, that is not going to cut it as the res is still 800 x 600. Might work for FPS, but not flight simming where one has to read the number on the guages.
June 24, 200619 yr there would also be an issue of not being able to see your keyboard for some keys. Breaks the illusion factor you are paying for too. Unless u fly an aircraft like PMDG where total simulation of the VC is possible.
June 24, 200619 yr That is actually a minnor issue if the all the buttons in the VC is clickable and the mouse will can be used for zoom. Aside from the FOV and Res issues. There are other issues involving VR as well. Take head tracking for example. The head tracker that comes with eMagine only provide 2 DOF (degree of free) of tracking. With 4DOF missing, users will have headaches. On top of that, those low end MEM (MicroElectroMechanical) trackers have drifts which trashes the immersion factor. You can install higher end tracker, but those usually cost at least a grand.
