Was the Bell X-1 painted orange for it's record-breaking flight in 1947?I only ask because I have seen it depicted before, but with more of a tan color.Rhett

It was painted orange to be more visible to people both in the B-29 dropship and the observers on the ground...

and the tan was likely just faded orange :)
