GTN 650 as Com2/Nav2 (resolved)

Hello all,

Just recently added the 650 to my GTN750 in the A2A 182. I must be missing some simple step here as I can not get it to work the Com2 and Nav2. Searched the forums for a couple of days however no luck so far. If its been covered somewhere point me to it please. As you can see on the picture below I have both of the Nav radios tuned to the same VOR. There is no indication on Nav2 while the Nav2 indicates on the HSI.

Similarly there is no radio call on Com2 to be heard  when tuned to the particular frequency. 

Below are my settings for both the 750 and 650 side by side.

Any help to get it working would be greatly appreciated. Im out of ideas. And yes I read the manual, however some stuff here might be out of my abilities.

Hi,

Are you sure it is a GTN_650_2 gauge in the panel.cfg file? There could have been a bug in the assistant putting a _1 instead of a _2 gauge but I doubt it, so better manually checking the panel.cfg file.

Besides, I thank you for the logs. I'm wondering why you're getting these 'fail bits' entries (there are designed for helping us troubleshooting our customers installations).

  1. Can you please let me know which Garmin trainer you are running with?
  2. Also can you please cross check these two file versions are the same:

    "C:\ProgramData\Reality XP\rxpGtnSim32.dll"
    "C:\ProgramData\Reality XP\rxpGtnSim64.dll"

The panel.cfg seems correct indeed. The trainer version explains why do you get the 'failed bits' message in the log. These 'bits' are expected with this version but the log message isn't. NB: this won't affect the product at all, it is just noise in the log file.

Something important to check then for radios 2, is whether the aircraft.cfg tells FltSim there are actually 2 radios.

Two flags, set the first one to 1 if a Com2 radio is available, and the second if it supports a standby frequency. You cannot have Com2 without Com1.

What Im going to try is to remove the 650 from the panel and replace it with the default radio on Com2/Nav2 to see if it is working at all. Was working fine before. Will report back, though it might take some days.

Hello Jean-Luc,

As promised here is an update and I have to report that it looks like I solved the issue. Here is what I did.

Before completely removing the 650 an idea struck me to check the status of the default radio stack in the A2A Skylane. So I turned on the battery and the avionics and used the A2A control panel - Ctrl+3 - to switch from the 750/650 combo to the default radio stack. Here I noticed that the Com2/Nav2 radio was off. Turned it on and switched back to GTN and now I have the 650 working as it should for Com2/Nav2. Did three flights and all is well so far. Not sure if there is something broken in my install or for whatever reason the second radio did not get turned on, but this workaround solved the issue.

Hi Alex and thank you for the update on this!

This most likely sound the A2A aircraft is probably 'over controlling' the state of the radios in order to achieve 'fidelity', at the expense of third party gauges relying on just default FltSim variables. This is unavoidable sometimes but I'm glad you've found a trick which will also certainly help others.

You might want to relay this to A2A devs though in case they spot either a bug, or they implement a workaround when using the GTN in their aircraft.
