August 15, 200619 yr Do folks have an idea how much Video Memory their system uses running the FSX demo? I know that depends on screen res, color depth, etc. and how long the game session has run, but I am curious to know if people have been keeping tabs on that.I can check mine within the driver utility, and so far, mine has only used about 60 meg running 1024x768 32 bit. Am curious to know if more memory on the video card would be useful if it is only using 60 meg now. Thanks,Ralph
August 16, 200619 yr Well the standard answer is that we'll use all you have. I have no idea what that utility is displaying...
August 16, 200619 yr Your utility surely is running with no 3D app running. I can see a 1024x768x32 *desktop* using only 60 megs vram. But not a 3D app like FS. If your utility still reports only 60 megs in use in FS, then I would be inclined to question that utility.I do believe that it has been said by tdragger that video memory is more important in FSX than raw card speed. In other words, 512 megs vram on a slower card is preferable to 256 megs on a faster card. How's that for a steel trap memory?? I remembered that statement. :)Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
August 16, 200619 yr Actually, when I am in the FSX demo, I switch to windowed mode, which lets me use the task bar. I go to Control Panel and my driver utility and it reports the video memory in use with FSX running - which is somewhere around 60 meg. When I close the game and just have the desktop or Internet Explorer open, it shows about 6 meg in use. So, it does make a difference. Also, the vid memory in use changes with the amount of area I have covered in the game - at least is does with FS9.Ralph
August 16, 200619 yr >What utility do you use? What is your video card? The utility is integrated into the drivers for my video, which is the onboard video subsystem of the Intel 82865G chipset.
August 16, 200619 yr You don't mention how much video ram your system has. Many of those integrated vid subsystems also use system ram, aka "shared ram" and thus the amount vid ram available at any given time is highly mutable. The answer by tdragger, "FS will use what you have" seems to be accurate, especially if you have 64 or 128. I have 256 megs and I would bet the farm that I use 150+ in FS. I have RivaTuner, so I will have to check! This is interesting...Rhett Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
August 16, 200619 yr >You don't mention how much video ram your system has......It will use up to 96 meg.
