George,

I know that there‘s not much in the FCOM 2 about the button but I think in the auto thrust section in the FCOM you can find some explanations. I‘m not at home right now but if I remember correctly it gives you max climb thrust in case of a single engine failure and if at the same time VNAV isn‘t operating correctly or you have FMC failures.. Also IIRC that‘s due to the fact that the 777 is normally always flown on auto thrust and you wouldn‘t be able to access the engine out climb page without the FMC available. 

A button you normally don‘t need.
