If I could retire anywhere, like Thomas Jefferson and Robert E Lee, it would be Virginia, it is just heaven on earth, especially when I visited the unsung city Roanoke which even has a "Star of Bethlehem" above its bright and active downtown core, a wonderful urban aquarium and butterfly museum, and a great transportation museum. Plus caves nearby, for those of us fliers who like to "fly" under the radar from time to time, I was raised as a hiker and a spelunker. Since we all get buried sooner or later, my parents were determined that I get rid of my fear of going underground, lol! But oddly enough, my Dad had even greater claustrophobia than I did. I love to fly, but do not like standing on the edge of tall buildings or mountains, or even looking down the stairs. He loved the earth, loved going under it, but did not like short crawl spaces--I feel it was natural and not out of the ordinary, we lived in the heart of earthquake country and had better luck escaping tornadoes where we came from, the Midwest, than the quakes we found in California. But somehow in his passing, as my Mom in hers, they taught me to overcome those fears in an uncanny way, so I just do not worry so much about tomorrow, makes me sleep better at night. And I moved to Arizona where natural disasters don't get ya, but poisonous insects and plants and snakes can. But you can fly above them, lol... It is because if my father was ever afraid, or my mother, they'd come to me or one of my brothers for aid. I am the last living of those brothers, but I remember their message "You have faith in yourself, stay strong, and tell others to have faith in themselves". I think that is the message of those of us who love flight, because it takes great faith to get a heavier than air object off the ground, but birds and the raptors before them have been doing this for millennia...
