Running FSX on Dual Monitors with DirectX 9 & DirectX 10 ?

Featured Replies

I was wondering if FSX will be able to run multiple monitors with DirectX9 on one and DirectX 10 on the other? Or will it only support one version of DirectX at runtime?John.

As it's an integral part of the operating system, you can't have two versions of DirectX on the same system at the same time. It will have to be either DX9 with WinXP or DX10 with Vista.Doug

Windows Vista will have both DX9 and DX10. In theory you could do this, but why would you want to???

> Windows Vista will have both DX9 and DX10. In theory you could do this, but why would you want to???Because I recently purchased a GF7800gtx card. When FSX and Vista arrive I will buy a new DX10 video card for my main monitor. But for my second smaller monitor I hope I can still use the GF7800gtx with DX9. Otherwise I would need to buy 2 new DX10 cards..John.

I didn't know that. Thanks. Now I understand the DX10 compliance issue regarding the video card(s).Doug

My understanding was that DX9 is used for Vista's GUI elements and DX10 for games. This would mean that when you play FS9 or FSX in windowed mode on Vista, DX10 takes care of all the in-game stuff and DX9 handles the FS9 / FSX window's transparency, flexing, shadows and other GUI-effects.So in essence games wouldn't have access to DX9, only DX10.EDIT:Nevermind, I watched the interview in question again and while yes, the Vista "Aero" GUI does run on DX9, the person being interviewed didn't actually say that games won't have access to DX9. All he said was that with DX10 hardware and games you'll have access to DX10, and that older games will still run just fine (which would suggest they DO have access to DX9, since DX10 isn't backwards compatible).

Actually games (or any program) can have access to whichever one they want. It's just a matter of making the right function calls.

But I doubt any program will be written to support that scenario.
