night time pop-up panels

I've been flying native VR for a while now (still miss FlyInside for the user friendlyness).  The only real problem I still encounter is when flying at night.  When I open a 2D pop-up panel inside VR, it is randomly so dark that I can hardly see it.  Sometimes it opens and is lit up so that you can easily read and use it, other times (randomly) it is almost impossible to make out as it is so dark.

Has anyone figured out what to do when it opens in dark mode?
