Crossing the Red – Southern Route

Starting from Avalon Airport in Victoria and ending at Jandakot Airport in Perth, the route proceeds to Melbourne, then north through Victoria and New South Wales, South Australia, reaching the northern most point at Alice Springs.  Heading west and south from Alice Springs we visit Uluru (Ayers Rock) then back tracking south and west to Coober Pedy and on to the southern coast at Ceduna.  Turning west the route proceeds across the flat, almost treeless Nullarbor Plain with stops at small dirt strips and the occasional paved airport.   Leaving the Nullarbor we arrive at the Great Southern Region of Western Australia at Gairdner River.  After a number of stops we reach our furthest west point at Margaret River and then turn north for the final legs into Jandakot.   The entire route will probably require a minimum of six sessions to complete.  It is anticipated that we will break up the sessions with other flights as desired.

The total length of the route is 3,194nm which will require at least 5 and possibly 6 sessions. 

 Aircraft Recommendations.  For most of the route you will want “work” plane that is moderately quick (200+ knts), but some airfields will require aircraft capable of short field operations.   Suitable aircraft include the King Air, Pilatus PC-12, Cessna 421, Cessna Citation Mustang, P-51 Mustang or preferred warbird.
