February 22, 20206 yr Hi, I am trying to generate scenery for x-plane with ortho4xp. I believe I have done it correctly adding the tile and overlay to the custom scenery directory of my x-plane installation. I see a difference when I run x-plane after adding the generated scenery so it is seeing the files. My question is what to expect from this. I want to have real individual buildings like single family homes, like the house I Iive in appear in the scenery when I fly low in an ultra light aircraft. However this does not seem to be happening. It seems to generate buildings that do not really exist. I can't recognize my own neighborhood or the main street of my town. Did I make a mistake in producing the scenery or is this how it should work? And if this is how it is supposed to work what is the point of generating scenery? Is there some other way to get the kind of scenery I want? Thanks
February 22, 20206 yr Author Also, I used zoom level 17 in ortho4xp, and Bing for the source data. I just viewed the texture files in the tiles folder with ddsviewer and they are not really high enough resolution. They are what would be seen from a higher altitude. And when I omit the overlay I don't get the automatically generated houses and trees. I just get the scenery as seen from a high altitude - even when I fly low. So I will try a custom zoom level with certain areas at zoom level 19. Would using google maps as the source for imagery work better?
February 22, 20206 yr Moderator The default overlay is not very accurate, it's an approximation of the buildings and trees. Ortho4XP does not generate 3D buildings, it just uses the default ones. Depending on where you fly and if you want accurate building placements and vegetations on top of your aerial imagery you'll have to use an addon such as xEurope https://simheaven.com/ (Which is free), or one of the ORBX TrueEarth packages.
