Reminder: rebuilding Prepar3d.cfg can work wonders

Featured Replies

The last time I did this was a good 2-3 years ago in the old build, so I kind of forgot about it as a last resort (or first resort) means of fixing weird problems that might surface and are refractory to every other thing one might do to restore normal behavior.  Just 5 weeks ago I assembled a brand new machine and install of v4.5.  Very nice upgrade in performance from the prior build.  I run UNLIMITED/vsync to 30Hz refresh, and as long as CPU and GPU don't go over 97% or so all's totally smoot.  And that was always true in the old v3.4 build as well.  Very predictable:  liquid smooth provided you're not maxed on either CPU or GPU or both, as you well know if you run P3D this way to a 30Hz screen.

A few days ago something weird started to happen w/ the new build:  tons of CPU and GPU headroom, yet I was gettng these slight 'shudders', which I guess we can call a 1 to 1.5 second brief fast stutter.  Irritating, never saw this w/ my old build.  So I chased all manner of possible causes for why this crept in relatively suddenly.   Went to no affinity mask and frames limited to 30 in-sim, downloaded the current nV driver which is just a few weeks newer than the prior one.  None of these actions helped at all.  Looking at process monitor to see if something else is competing for resources.  Nothing.

Then I remembered I should just try rebuilding Prepar3D.cfg as a last ditch effort to restore normal behavior.  I keep a virgin copy w/ my preferred basic settings already configured, so I just dropped it in to replace the current one:  all better now.  Settings much higher, totally smooth again, and so simple to do.  I post this just in case like me you forgot about this most basic reset that can indeed worked wonders.
