October 18, 200619 yr I was poking around on the site waiting for a forum to load up and I noticed the "Contribute to the R. Harvey Scholarship" link at the top of the page. Then I started to remember the days when I got to meet Richard Harvey and hung out in the Terminal Reality Offices in Dallas, TX. I also started remembering about Fly! and how it was a tough battle between them and Microsoft on who had the best simulator. So, I started bee-boppin' around to the TRI websites and found some screen shots where they left off almost 5 years ago with the release of Fly! II. In my opinion, FSX is just about to catch up to the legacy of Richard Harvey and his team of developers that made the Fly! series.http://www.godgames.com/images/games/scree...bbfdeb0a08b.jpgI only wish Richard Harvey was still here to see how the market is evolving.I know that there's a difference between FSX and Fly! II but look at the screens, despite the bugs in Fly! it was still waaay ahead of its time, or was it? Who's the guy at the head of the pyramid setting the time-table on when we're going to get a really awesome simulator that we can all run and all be happy about?
October 18, 200619 yr whats not ahead of Microsoft products? But Microsoft usually makes it simple and thats what sells. That and owning the OS for 80% or more of the computers in use.Fly and fly2 were great and played pretty well on most computers at its release.
October 18, 200619 yr I'm not knocking Fly II, I think it was a good sim. However, you can't compare the two.The image you provide is a static bitmap with some transparent areas to let the scenery show through. You can't pan around the cockpit in 3D.Microsoft FSX has the entire cockpit modelled in 3D, including all the switches, knobs, bezels, etc... and all the guages still work in the 3D environment. That is lightyears beyond the static bitmaps we dealt with back in the Fly II days. And in reality, the game didn't look all that good... how does this compare to FSX?http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/158994.jpg
October 19, 200619 yr I loved Fly and the comradrie that was present in the Fly forum. The panels in Fly and Fly II were ahead of their time. I still fondy recall Rich giving us periodic updates on the progress of the sim even before it was released, and his almost constant availability to respond to questions after it was released.Rich was a great guy. His contribution to the sim and his personal example of courage and grace in his battle with cancer will always be warmly remembered and appreciated. He is in a wonderful place now. Thanks for your post. It has reminded my to say a brief prayer for the well-being of his wife and kids. -Rick----------- My System -----------P4 @ 2.53 GHz / 1GB RAM / NVIDIA GeForce 6800XT, 256MB / Windows XP Home
October 19, 200619 yr Author Fly!! had some nice looking aircraft but the ucky world was pretty bad. Had lot's of potential though. It's a shame it couldn't have been fixed up correctly.
