FSX performance - my findings re. Traffic settings

Featured Replies

My rig : AMD X2 3800+ OC to 2400 MHz, 2 GB RAM @ 240Mhz 3-4-4-11, Nvidia 6800 GT 256Mo.I use following settings in Scenery : Level of detail radius : Large Mesh complexity 100 Mesh resolution 5 m Texture resolution 0.6m Scenery complexity : to the max Autogen : to the max Special animation : to the maxI have tried a number of performance tweaks so far : disabling the default.xml file in Autogen, reducing the complexity of the regular autogen buildings & trees (thanks to Matt Fox), disabling Antialiasing in FsX and forcing it to 2x in the driver. With these tweaks, I could raise Autogen to the max or put it to 0 I always had poor FPS (in the low 10) and very annoying stuttering, with almost same FPS at the 2 extremes of Autogen slider (ie., in the low 12 on ground, and barely better/worse in the air).I then followed another advice to run FSX on HIGH priority, and the stutters disappeared - but still the same poor FPS.So, I started to play with each setting one at a time, and finally found that the *big* FPS killer is the Traffic simulator : sitting idle on KLAX runway, I have 31 FPS with all Traffic set to 0, and about 8.8 FPS with all Traffic set to 100% - but even at 25%, FPS is already down to 11.I am not going to rant on the fact that this didn't get caught and fixed before FSX release, but at least it now deserves to be addressed with high priority - IMO.(as a comparison point, Autogen w/ Matt Fox tweak eats 3 FPS on my rig, and Scenery eats about 9 FPS - so 22 FPS for Traffic is way too much). While I am at it, I also noticed that you have to have the aviation sliders in Traffic set to greater than zero, in order to have some planes & ground vehicles displayed on the airport. In other words, there are no static planes & ground vehicles... something else to fix IMO.Dom

More than likely it's being worked on by some hard working guys as we speak.Another "add on tweak" I'm looking forward to is a new set of road textures with "cars" painted on them to give all of the secondary roads the appearance of having traffic on them, in addition to the moving traffic on freeways we now have. With the higher resolution textures in FSX they should look pretty good.
