Which component(s) should I upgrade?

Featured Replies

Windows 10 Professional (64-bit)
Memory (RAM): 16338 MB
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
CPU Speed: 3397.7 MHz
Display Adapters: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Motherboard: Intel Corporation DQ67SW

I run all of the usual add-ons. PMDG, ActiveSky, Orbx, Airport Sceneries, GSX etc.

I bought my PC second-hand a few years ago and it was not intended for flight simming. I have the sliders around medium to low and usually get around 20 fps in the flight deck and 30-40 fps (limited) outside.

Although at some of the larger airports the frames drop below 15 fps, which is especially annoying on the approach. Ideally I'd like to have a steady 20 fps+ in the flight deck and be able to to increase my sliders to medium/high. I'm willing to pay about 500 GBP to upgrade.

Thanks for your input! 🙂

I upgraded my system which in some ways is similar to yours.

1) If your CPU is old (and it is), I upgraded my i7-2600k to a brand new, factory sealed i7-2700 for around $200.  I can easily OC to 4.8GHz on air.  Found it on Ebay.  This way you don't have to purchase a new motherboard.

2) Upgrade the GPU.  On another PC I replaced my 970 with the new GeForce 1660 for $230.  Better stats than the good ol' 970.  Or if you have the bucks look into a 1080 or 2080 (ti version would be overkill for your system).

3) PSU - if you do upgrade the GPU m double check your PSU for enough wattage.  My 7 year old Rosewell 1300W was stating to show spikes a start up so I dropped in a new Antec 1000w.

4) Cooling - are you running stock cooling?  Maybe look into Nochtua or some other name brand for air cooling.

5)  HDD - you don't mention what your HDD stats are.  I would grab a 500GB SSD ($50) for my Windows operating system drive and then maybe pick up a 2TB for my flightsim drive.

6) Speaking of Windows, now ma be the time to think about a full, clean reinstall of the OS to clean out the cobwebs and have fast boots and operations.

I did these and its like having a new PC.  Again, just suggestions

Intel i9-12900KF, Asus Prime Z690-A MB, 64GB DDR5 6000 RAM, (3) SK hynix M.2 SSD (2TB ea.), 16TB Seagate HDD, Gigabyte GeForce 5080 RTX, Corsair iCUE H70i AIO Liquid Cooler, UHD/Blu-ray Player/Burner (still have lots of CDs, DVDs!)  Windows 10, (hold off for now on Win11),  EVGA 1300W PSU
Netgear 1Gbps modem & router, (3) 27" 1440 wrap-around displays
Full array of Bravo, Saitek and GoFlight hardware for the cockpit. Varjo and HP VR headsets for mixed reality.
