Not able to create low IFR conditions for approaches.

Featured Replies

One of my major gripes, among others, (seems petty right now with all the other issues) is the inability to set actual ceilings and visibilities for pratice instrument approaches and misses approaches.  They implemented "aerosol density" instead of visibility slider. Their claim is that it is supposed to mimic "real world" settings of atmosperic conditions.  Wonderful idea, in theory, except unfortunately, simmers still need the ability to input real world metars to simulate real world conditions.  Although, aerosol density works somewhat, it is still doesn't give specific conditions at the end of an instrument approach.  Funny thing, in over 25 yrs in the airline industry and GA world, I've never heard the term "aerosol density" ever.

In my testing, including flying the set conditions, I could not achive true low IFR conditions.  The lowest conditions I could achieve was about 3/4 mile visibility and a 600ft ceiling "appearence" of what real world conditions look like.  From the weather settings you are able to set cloud layers all the way to the ground (AGL), but the cloud layers are too transparent no matter what "aerosoI density" slider is set too.

To test this, find a runway that is about 5000ft (which is close to 1 mile), set the lowest cloud layer (bottom) to 0.  Now change coverage and scattered layers to 100%.  You can vary the "aerosol density".  If you can see the end runway lights, you still have around 1 mile visibility. The lowest VFR conditions, in class G airspace, is 1mile, clear of clouds.  My point is, you can get the sim to marginal VFR conditions, but not true IFR conditions.   Aboso's IFR module stated that we would have the ablility to change visibility and ceilings for pratice instrument approaches.

Well, we didn't get a visibility slider, but good news, we got a "snow depth" slider for more eye candy instead. 😂.

If anyone figures out how to repeat conditions for low IFR pratice approaches and missed approaches, I would love to hear how.

Looks strange, I found conditions where you could crash into the ground before seeing it.
