August 23, 20205 yr Hello group, Let me just say I'm loving FS2020. After a few tweaks, I'm getting closer to what makes a really enjoyable flight experience. Understood, as we move along with further updates, the settings and tweaks and other bits will change. I just wanted to share where I'm at for the moment. My system specs are in my sig, but of note: - I have a dedicated m2 nvme for my O/S (Win10) - Also have a dedicated m2 nvme for my flight sims, (FS2020, DCS, and IL-2 BoX) - Lastly, since I had the slot/space, I also added a dedicated m2 nvme for my page/swap file Since I have 64GB's of 3200mhz RAM, I made my swap file of an equivalent size for it. Though I don't think I ever swap, I thought I saw somewhere that FS2020 likes to have something for swap regardless. (No, I did not buy this nvme because of FS2020. It's just that I'm a computer geek, I had the open drive slot, and I know for performance at work, we keep the virtual memory separate from the O/S). I've also made an exception with my Anti-Virus for my FS2020 installation directory, (along with my other flight sim apps). Here are my FS2020 settings: - Using a hybrid custom display setting. "High", with a few tweaks - 3840x2160 for my 4K TV (native setting) - Terrain detail: 200 - Objects level of detail: 200 - AF = 16 - Shadow Maps: 1536 - Terrain shadows: 1024 - aviation traffic: 20 - airport life: 20 - cars & sea (or whatever it is): 20 - Rolling cache: off (I've heard this is buggy, so I've turned it off. May re-enable once it's squared away) - Controls: for now, I've set the pitch, yaw and roll for -50 sensitivity and a 3 for the deadzone. Seems to have tamed things out a little bit, but not quite there. I'll make further tweaks once we have a larger body of data & feedback from userland.... Now for my flight experience (via the Phoenix metro area). Using the GA Xcub... I took off from Williams Gateway in the east valley. Heading west. Looking left/right/forward, I was averaging from the low to mid 30's for FPS. Things really looked smooth for me. So no complaints. After clearing the Gateway ATC, I headed towards Chandler and made a landing at Stellar Airpark. Again, the FPS's were in the low to mid 30's, and it looked smooth for me. No complaints. I then departed Stellar and flew North towards Tempe. Papago Park, the Union Pacific train bridge, the Salt River, and Tempe Lake, looked great! Again, FPS's were in the low to mid 30's. I then veered west and flew over Sky Harbor. FPS's in the low to mid 30's, no complaints. Yes, the Phoenix metro area has a lot of building's and busy terrain. No issue with the FPS's and smooth viewing. South Mountain, Camelback Mountain, Woot! All looked great!!! I then went to Glendale, circled a bit, and then took a longer flight path back to the east towards Red Mountain. FPS's still at the low to mid 30's. After Red Mountain, I headed south, passed through Bull Dog Canyon (where I take my Jeep TJ through quite a bit). This is getting old... It looked great! 🙂 So I finished my flight by calling out to Williams ATC for a landing, and finished the adventure. What a hoot, and I loved it. I even showed my Wife our house during this, and we had a great chuckle pointing out the schools our kids went too! For the entire Phoenix Metro experience, I was always in the low to mid 30's for my FPS. Sure, it's not the 60's some others want, but for smooth flying in Pancake mode, I loved seeing and recognizing everything here in my home town! Yes, I know... I was using a GA bird. But I'm cool with that.... Now to JFK..... I've seen lots of post regarding the FPS's for the JFK area. So I figured, why not. Let's give that bad boy a whirl too. Using my GA Xcub, (indeed it's not an airliner), I setup a flight to depart from JFK. I was lined up for a west departure. I noticed my FPS's were around 30-31. No problem, and I took off without incident. Not being familiar with the New York area, I was kind of unsure what to do. But then I saw all the buildings in Manhattan and the Empire State building landmark. That made things easy. So I flew over there, and while tooling around Manhattan I was getting FPS's around 30-31, and an occasional drop to 25-26, which lasted a sec or two, and would jump back up to 30 or 31. I then flew around the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. Seeing FPS's at around 30/31, with a few spots where it dropped to 25/26 for a sec or two.... I then called JFK ATC requesting a landing. When I went into the pattern, that's when I noticed a big drop in FPS's. That occurred once I was near the east end of the airport and terminal. The FPS's dropped to 16-18. And remained until I touched down and cleared the east end terminals, (while heading northwest). After which, I was back into the upper 20's, and then 30/31 for the FPS's. Some pretty heavy textures or modeling going on over at that side of the airport? In short, my conclusion: - FS2020 - she's a keeper - I'm planning to buy a newer nVidia RTX3xxx card once available - that's a given... hoping we don't see nVidia extortion pricing nonetheless... - looking forward to VR, it's the only way to fly - for now, pancake mode and trackir, I'm really enjoying things - will I continue to tweak settings? yes... - Glad I bought her??? Woot, h*ll yes!!! thanks, -Jav Edited August 23, 20205 yr by javelina MSI MAG Z790 Carbon, i9-13900k, NH-D15 cooler, 64 GB CL40 6000mhz RAM, MSI RTX4090, Yamaha 5.1 A/V Receiver, 4x 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe, 1x 2TB Samsung 870 EVO SSD, Win 11 Pro, TM Warthog, Virpil WarBRD, MFG Crosswinds, 43" Samsung 4K TV, 21.5 Acer VT touchscreen, TrackIR, Varjo Aero, Wheel Stand Pro Super Warthog, Phanteks Enthoo Pro2 Full Tower Case, Seasonic GX-1200 ATX3 PSU, PointCTRL, Buttkicker 2, K-51 Helicopter Collective Control
August 24, 20205 yr Author Just a couple additional data points. - I tried with both Vsync on and then off, noticed nothing. I wasn't really expecting to either. I've been using the game ready driver 452.06. So I was curious if the previous release of the driver had any impact. So I rolled backed to 451.85, (which is the hotfix for 451.67). I did use DDU to clean out the current driver before installing the replacement for 451.85, I averaged around 31-32 FPS... I then removed 451.85, and went back to 452.06. Flying the same bird and route, I averaged 32-33 FPS. Nothing to write home about, but at least it satisfied my curiosity...
