How to fly Mooney G1000 for ILS approach?

Featured Replies

Folks,I am trying to use the Mooney Bravo (with G1000) and land at KFSO Rwy 28L. Using the Garmin with Autopilot engaged and the ILS freq selected I cannot see any indications on the PFD display that Autopilot, APR, Nav etc is engaged although pressing Shift + 2 shows that they can be selected on correctly. I had a peek at the Garmin Manual and although I know it is not exactly the same same as FSX it does show indicators on the Display for GS (Glideslope) AP (Autopilot) LOC etc. The ILS Freq shows as Green in the PFD but I have not been able to get this Mooney to do more than follow a LNAV (Lateral) auto-navigation path. Has anyone had any indicators (AP GS LOC etc) at all under the Garmin's PFD, below where it indicates WPT DIS DTK TRK?Does anyone have any suggestions on how to engage Approach mode and have this Aircraft follow the Glideslope down? Many thanks.PaulAMD 64 3800+ 2G RAM 6800 GT(15-23 FPS at KFSO)

Folks,Actually, I finally worked it out. I was within about 3-4 miles of the Airport while trying to setup the Approach and this prevented the APR hold mode from working properly. As soon as I flew further out (6 miles or so) I could engage and fly the glideslope with no worries. There still seem to be no AP, GS or LOC indicators though, on the PFD display, when engaged, which just has to be wrong?Paul

Press the CDI softkey...At least that's how it should be done IRL IIRC.Edit= It's right at the bottom as shown by this picture (put a 'h' in front of ttp):ttp://marc.merlins.org/blogmedia/g1000_pfd.jpg

Dan,Thanks for the reply. I had tried the CDI softkey so I could select GPS or LOC but when I was within 3 miles (approx) of the Airport it would not engage the Glideslope. As soon as I went further out and tried again, no worries. The thing is, there should be at least an indicator on the PFD that indicates the Autopilot, Glideslope or LOC is engaged and there doesnt seem to be one, although the actual G1000 Garmin unit does have this indication. Just a strange ommission perhaps?Paul

The G1000 in FS X has no autopilot in it. You have to use the standard FS Bendix AP. The G1000 will not show you any AP information, but you can set various settings on the AP using the G1000 (like HDG and ALT). So the G1000 is linked to the AP but that's it. Simply said: turning the AP on and choosing HDG or NAV or APR etc. must be done on the Bendix: setting the HDG, frequencies, ALT. etc. can be done on the G1000 (apart from the VS though, which can only be set on the AP itself). To see if an ILS is working alright you can check the information on the AP after enabling APR (for instance, if I'm not mistaken, HDG will turn of automatically when the ILS is intercepted) and you will of course see the Glideslop Indicator and Course Deviation Indicator moving on the G1000.

J Van E,Thanks for your reply too. What you have suggested is certainly supported by the behaviour I have seen. It seems a strange thing to do with such a modern piece of Technology as the G1000, especially as the actual G1000 in real life does have the Autopilot, Glidescope etc indicators. At least it works.Paul

Well... as far as I know that depends on the plane it is build into. When you go here http://www.garmin.com/products/g1000/# and press on the Product Showcase button you will see exactly what you see in FS X! There are no AP buttons on the MFD on the right like there seems to be in the real Baron-version (AFAIK), so...
