August 29, 20205 yr I have a Verizon router. Since this game/sim is downloading data while we fly would a better router help? I assume some routers are faster than others. I know nothing about routers. What make of routers do you pilots use? As long as it doesn't cost more than $300. Any suggestions would be appreciated. August 29, 20205 yr Check your router specs. I know my Xfinity one maxes out at 600mbps. I'm on a 200mbps plan, so the routher is good enough for my unless I want to upgrade the plan (+$30/mo for 1gbps). I have a number of ethernet cables strung around the basement and 10/100 switches everywhere, so I'm thinking about upgrading the switches/cabling first. Some of the Ethernet cables are pretty old, so I'll need to deal with those as well. My point is you should look at all of the possible choke points. The router may be fine, but your cables may be the issue. I'm still not sure if I should be upgrading to Cat 6 or Cat 6a. Not sure if I need shielded or unshielded. August 29, 20205 yr Author My Fios is 100/100. Cat 6 or Cat 6a? I would get shielded. https://www.cableorganizer.com/learning-center/articles/what-is-difference-between-cat6-cat6a.html I am using Cat5, four run throught the house, 2 50' and 2 100'. We have four desktops and three laptops. Laptops are WiFi. I've been reading router review and many seem great until checking Amazon and Newegg reviews.
