MSFS 2020 not playing nice with OBS for streaming/etc.?

Featured Replies

Trying to double check my settings before doing a stream later tonight and having some really weird behavior that I can't figure out.  Just trying to see if anyone else has seen this and/or has any suggestions.  For some reason when I fire up OBS and especially if I start a test stream, GPU usage goes from 70-90% down to like the teens even though MSFS is in focus and so of course in sim FPS tanks.  Once it starts it will continue even if streaming/recording is shut off but the software is still open.  This is only happening with MSFS but I'm assuming it's a sim or OBS config issue.  I see many people streaming the sim though so I'm not sure what's up here.

Are you using a GPU or CPU encoder profile?

I use CPU encoding with no issues.

I tried both, but it's even having issues just with OBS open and not streaming/recording anything.  Also I think I've narrowed it down to the EGKK addon being a big part of the problem (tried both the normal one and the "lite" one that doesn't have animations.  It's just weird because it's fine at that addon airport without OBS open.  Open OBS and GPU usage just tanks even disabled hardware acceleration in it etc.

Unfortunately for my planned stream, if it is the gatwick addon causing most of these issues somehow, I'm going to have to plan a new one as I'd intended to land there 😞

Just did a new test.  Sitting at "gate 85" at the Gatwick "lite" addon I was at 90% GPU usage.  Just simply fired up OBS and it dropped to 50%.  I understand that OBS uses the GPU to render the scene before encoding, but that's why it's even more confusing that GPU usage drops.

I have never seen a framerate impact like that with OBS.  But I'm on an AMD GPU.

Where you create the scene that captures the game window contents, I think there are several options for what method OBS uses to capture what the game is showing.  Maybe try the alternate options?  Also make sure you'd using 'game capture' and not 'window capture'?

Yeah I tried that.  I think somehow a large part of this is related to that EGKK addon.  It's a highly rated addon and I know I've seen people stream to it before, though I haven't watched them and don't know what resolution etc. they used or what OBS settings.  I had been doing some testing of recording settings last night and while I wasn't watching for GPU usage, I also wasn't having FPS issues. I went to look at usage to try and figure out what was going on today though because at this airport I was dipping to low teens randomly and that's when I noticed the ridiculously low GPU usage, like 15-20% when it was happening.

Edit:  Forgot to mention.  I tried creating a new profile and new blank scene in OBS so basically nothing added in etc. to see if it was an overlay or other source causing the issue, and I still got the 15-20% GPU usage drop just opening OBS by itself.

So I think I fixed it.  I was running the sim with "Texture Resolution" on Ultra and that combo with the EGKK addon seems to have been too much for my 8GB 2080 Super and causing it to choke. I tried multiple other things before this switch such as turning off Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling etc. but once I lowered the texture resolution in the sim to High it's now running a stream test to Twitch with zero FPS or other issues for 15 minutes now. The utilization is still down but that must be a feature of HAGS as when I disabled it the GPU was running flat out at 99% all the time but still having issues after a few minutes of test streams.  As a matter of fact it was worse with HAGS off even though it appeared better FPS at first.  After a few minutes it would start choking on FPS in cockpit and outside using either NVENC or X264 and getting both rendering and encoding dropped frames.
