Do I understand that the GNS530 controls only one radio?  Does this mean that one must add (or retain) a second radio on the panel, or add the 430 for radio control?

This is correct, like the real unit. Should you want to controlling 2 COMs, you could use 2 GNS, or 1 GNS + 1 Radio.

The RXP GNS also offers the convenience to setup any device unit (#1 or #2) to controlling any COM/NAV pair (#1 or #2) independently.
