SU5 CTDs - what unequivocally worked for me

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I know there are a thousand theories out there, for "fixing" the CTDs introduced with SU5, but I just thought I'd share what 100% worked for me.

Here's the context - after updating to SU5, I was getting CTDs on every attempt to use the sim;  sometimes it would crash while loading, sometimes on the map screen, and sometimes after 5 mins of flying.

I did my Googling and checked a bunch of factors off my list.... things like making sure Offline AI traffic is turned off (until fixed), not running a software overclocker such as MSI Afterburner, not using Process Lasso, and not using Nvidia Inspector.

I then found one piece of advice that I'd not put into action yet;-

  • To disable Hyperthreading in the BIOS, and;
  • To disable Virtualization in the BIOS

I went into my BIOS, disabled those processes, and saw a striking difference is MSFS - a significant performance boost, and more importantly, I've flown around 8 flights since and never had a single CTD.  The sim seems to move more smoothly between menus, loads quicker, and well..... no CTDs!   Although it may not be a one size fits all fix for everyone, this 100% sorted all of my stability issues out with SU5.

If your machine supports virtualization it will likely be enabled by default.  It can be disabled in the same section of your BIOS that Hyperthreading will be in.

Apparantly the MSFS process is just too complex and resource heavy to be hyperthreaded.   Oftentimes, the CTDs are occuring when the machine is attempting to hyperthread, and a process split fails to reconcile, and bam..... a CTD.
