FSX Steam/Alpha Yoke/Saitek Pro Controller

Featured Replies

Unable to get the Controller to work ie 1> throttle operates the ailerons    2> RPM lever operates the elevator  3> mixture is the throttle.

In settings, I am unable to find proper settings for the three levers. X/Y axis is the ailerons and elevator not the three functions they should be.

Prior to attempting to set-up the controls I downloaded and installed the data from the Honycomb site for FXS Steam.

thx

Settings/Controls from the main menu, or Options/Settings/Controls from the in-flight menu. You map the axes on the 'Control axes' tab. Don't bother with the Honeycomb software until you manage to program the devices from the FSX menus first, then you can experiment if you can't get all the buttons and switches to do what you need.

Mark,  please note: I set up fsx with megascenery and saitek controls years ago and have not had any problems.  Therefore did not do a whole lot of fiddling with the programs.  I know where the control axis tab is but don't understand what you mean by "map over". If you answer this you will have to be very specific for me to understand.  My problem may be that I decided to change to the Honycomb alpha yoke and while still maintaining the Saitek Pro Flight quadrant. I seem to have the yoke basically set-up but my quadrant thinks its the yoke.

Mixing the Honeycomb yoke and Saitek quadrant is no problem as long as you start from scratch. Basically you should not trust that FSX will automatically map your controls and so you will need to do it all manually. (You say you did this all before with no problems, but it sounds like you probably had a Saitek yoke quadrant combo at that time, which FSX likely mapped sensibly by default. The Saitek USB quadrant is a different device, so it's no surprise FSX treats it differently.)

Perhaps you are confused by terms - 'mapping' a control is the same thing as 'binding' or 'assigning' a control (I didn't say 'map over', so I can't be more specific about what is confusing you). It sounds like your yoke axes are mapped correctly, so you should focus on the quadrant. The quadrant doesn't 'think' it is a Saitek yoke, it's just a dumb device and it's FSX that's tried to guess what it is. Based on that guess it's assigned some default mappings, which evidently are wrong, so you need to change them.

This is a simple matter of going to the Control Axes tab in the Settings/Controls page and editing the assignments for Throttle, Prop and Mixture controls. On this page, make sure you have the Saitek quadrant selected in the Controller Type list, then find the axis (a.k.a. 'Event') you want in the Assignment List. Click on it, then click 'Change Assignment' and follow the instructions.

This is all documented in some detail the Learning Centre.

Mark, when I go to Setting, select the Saitek Controller, the x,y,z axis is assigned to yoke functions. When I look at the throttle and try to change the throttle axis it requests a move of the joystick? Moving any lever on the controller has no effect.

I'm taking up too much of your time. I'm at the point now (two weeks) where I'm going to disconnect the Honycomb from the computer, put it in a box and sell it on Ebay. I'm not real happy with this yoke. The elevator takes too much pressure to use and there are far too many buttons on the yoke. I'm 85 and I don't need these complications. It may come to pass that I will need to reinstall fsx, thrd party airplanes and 10 Megascenery files, but, I guess that's the way it is. I like fsx because it has planes that fill my needs. It has the Bellanca Super Viking which I owned many years ago and a Cessna 185 (I owned a Cessna 180 some time later. Close enough). So I don't want to move to the newer AVSIMS.

thx Joe S
