November 30, 20214 yr I am flying nothing else but the FBW A32NX. Absolutely loving it. However, I often have the feeling the decel point is always too late... Whenever I let the Airbus do its thing, I come in too high and/or too fast, so it seems. However, activating approach phase manually (like 15 or 20 nm from destination or FAF) only seems to result in coming in even higher because of the lower speed and hence lower descent. Obviously this doesn't happen everywhere but whenever there are alt restrictions and I have to descent a few 1000 ft during approach I get into problems. Now of course I could activate approach phase even earlier and fly 140 kts with full flaps at 40 nm already but er... I'd like to do it realistically. 😉 Is that decel point really accurate (already)? Or am I simly doing something wrong?
November 30, 20214 yr Commercial Member I'm no airbus pilot but I do have a friend who flew 320s for TigerAir AU, and from what he told me is ATC doesn't like you getting too slow too soon most of the time, they want the flow smooth and efficient, so hes told me often they would have to pump the spoilers and flaps close to the airport, but ofcourse this depends on many factors. The decel point seems ok to me on most cases with the FBW320, I haven't had any issues managing the speed coming into land. I find if you fly the STAR accordingly and are at the designated ALT/SPD CSTR on the star, then the whole approach goes smoothly, as it should. Maybe someone with real life experience can help you further.
