MSFS Simple Airport Randomizer

Featured Replies

I know that this is not a new concept and it has been done before, but being a spreadsheet geek, I had a very particular niche I wanted filled. I did not want a random route, and I wanted to be able to just quickly generate a few random airports in different parts of the world, and then let myself see them on a map and get excited about wanting to fly either FROM there or TO there.

So, I extracted the airport data from MSFS (via LittleNavMap), cleaned up and chopped up the data a bit and built myself a quick and dirty random airport generator using a spreadsheet. Two of them, actually... one for hard surface airports and one for soft surface airports.

The spreadsheets are public "view only" Google Sheets, so you can go to the links and anytime you refresh your browser at them they will generate new airports. I highly recommend that you "make a copy" of them if you have a Google account so that they are editable by you and in your Google Drive, so that way you can just toggle the checkbox in the top left to generate new airports at will. Making copies for yourself will also allow you to customize them if you are a spreadsheet aficionado. They can also be downloaded as Excel files, if that is your tool of choice. The data that sources the airports are hidden sheets, which you will be able to unhide if you make a copy for yourself. Also, by making a copy for yourself, you don't have to worry about them going offline or not available in the future.

Airports generated have links to Google Maps, SkyVector, FlightAware available, so you can generate a random airport, click the Google Maps cell to open a Satellite view of the airport, and then decide if you wish to fly to or from there. Simple (and quite addicting.)
