Sim Soaring Club - Sim Soaring Saturday

Featured Replies

Apparently there is a discord group trying to start Saturday community flights in gliders.    For the last few weeks I've flown the excellent freeware Touching Cloud DG-808S almost exclusively.

I'm going to do my best to make this flight,   never flown with these guys before.    The DG-808s is top quality,   and it's super fun to fly.   It has a glide ratio over 51.5 to 1,  and a top speed of 170mph.

It's really a blast flying low over a ridge line,  and managing your energy state with flaps and brakes.  It's a very engaging type of flight for the mind.

The 808s is equipped with a retractable engine,  but Saturday's flight plan will utilize ridge lift soaring all the way.

There are two other freeware Sailplanes.    The AS-22-ME by MadoloSimulations, https://flightsim.to/file/15090/as-33-me.  The Discus-2c by GotFriends,    https://flightsim.to/file/25518/discus-2c-glider.

I haven't tried the AS-33,  but it looks nice.   I quite like the DG.

The Discus is a fine aircraft,  but it's not as interesting to me because it doesn't have flaps.   Managing your energy state with flaps is too fun to do without them.

Not sure if this floats anyone's boat,  but I thought I'd post it anyway.   If you haven't tried ridge surfing in a nice glider in MSFS,   I highly recommend you give it a shot.   Super fun.

Good timing add the payware version of the Got Friends Discus should be out in the next few hours.

Just enough time to get some practice in then join the flight at the weekend.

GotGravel has been trying to jump start community flights too.   https://discord.com/channels/793376245915189268/929195397375746048

I've been using their weather presets and flight plans,  or at least that's how I got back into gliding with MSFS.    Haven't flown with them yet due to scheduling conflicts,  but intend to.

Really,  no weather presets are needed though.   Just set a ground wind speed of 6 or 7 knots,  and set the wind's direction to compliment your flight plan.

I'm definitely going to buy the payware version.  It looks great,  and GotGravel / GotFriends are good people to support.
