Low Level at high elevations - Peru

Featured Replies

Today we will visit two of the world's deepest canyons:

The Colca Canyon and the Cotahuasi Canyon in Peru.

The Colca Canyon is a canyon of the Colca River in southern Peru, located about 160 kilometers (99 mi) northwest of Arequipa. With a depth of about 1000 - 2000 m (3300 - 6600 ft) (whereas the bottom is at ca 2000 m and edges are at 3000 - 4000 meters above the sea level), it is one of the deepest canyons in the world. Its length is about 70 kilometers (43 mi). The Colca Valley is a colorful Andean valley with pre-Inca-rooted inhabitants, and towns founded in Spanish colonial times, still inhabited by people of the Collagua and the Cabana cultures. The local people maintain their ancestral traditions and continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces, called Andenes. It is Peru's third most-visited tourist destination with about 120,000 visitors annually.

The Cotahuasi Canyon is also one of the deepest canyons in the world. With a depth of approximately 3,354 meters (11,004 ft), as defined as the difference in elevation at river level and the peak of a mountain alongside the canyon, it is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The Cotahuasi River eroded the canyon between two mountain massifs: the Coropuna (6,425 m or 21,079 ft ASL) and the Solimana (6,093 m or 19,990 ft ASL).

We depart from La Paz International Airport El Alto (SLLP) in Bolivia and make our first landing at Copacabana (SLCC) on a peninsula in Lake Titicaca, still in Bolivia. We fly along Lake Titicaca, cross the border to Peru, and land at Inca Manco Capac (SPJL) at the northeastern end of the lake. A long leg heading southwest and another leg heading west lead us to Arequipa, a town surrounded by three volcanoes. We land at Rodriguez Ballon (SPQU) for a short rest.  leg ahead of us. Heading north gets us to the entry of the Colca Canyon. We follow the canyon low level until we reach WP 10. From here we follow the river and reach the Pacific coast. Then we turn northeast, follow another river north and reach the entry for the Cotahuasi Canyon. Again, we follow the canyon at low level and finally fly a long leg east to reach today’s destination Yauri (SPIY).

Documentation: Flight plans are here.

Aircraft: The flight has 590 miles and 3 landings. We want to cruise at about 250 knots. This will offer a wide variety of airplanes, from warbirds to subsonic jets to small business jets or fast turboprops. Keep in mind that flying at a low level through the canyons requires an agile aircraft. I will probably be in the PC-21. As always, please fly what you like.

We try real weather, but we need VMC conditions to fly through the canyons! Please set your simulator for a 10 am local departure.
