Improving the Sun Effect when light-bloom is off.

Featured Replies

Light-bloom is a fairly heavy hit on the fps so I know a lot of us have to switch it off. The visual effect on the sun pretty dire though, like a dim bulb in the sky. The sun, and a large portion of the sky surrounding it should appear to blaze when observed directly. I played around with the suneffect.cfg file and got some nice results. Heres some pictures.*Note: Light-bloom is off, lens-flare on & the default sky textures have been replaced by the most excellent payware "RealSky V3 Extra Edition" versions. Some comparisons.http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/5724/suneffectlc2.jpgAt sunset and the suns afterglow, which stays present for longer and is more intense.http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/8366/suneffect1xf8.jpgThe result is achieved by altering the three parameters that control the sun, corona and the halo/glow. Their size and intensity. Opinions sought.[Edit]Woops I forgot to post the cfg code! Paste these into your suneffect.cfg over-writing the first three paragraphs with these three. Its located in main "Flight Simulator X" folder. REMEMBER TO BACKUP THE ORIGINAL!!![general]SunSize=1100MoonSize=2072SunTexture="sun.bmp"LensFlareCount="10"RenderCorona="1"RenderGlow="1"RenderMoonCorona="1"[LensFlare.1]Texture="sunglow.bmp"Size="1.9"Location="1.00"Intensity="1.5"Sunglow="1"[LensFlare.2]Texture="corona1.bmp"Size="0.55"Location="1.00"Intensity="0.4"Corona="1"Dotsie.

wow, this is awesome, can't wait for a release!

>wow, this is awesome, can't wait for a release!I think you may be confused and think that the sky textures come with this! They look super good but they are from the pay-ware "RealSky V3 Extra Edition" which i HIGHLY recommend. The sky will still look neon purple it's just that the sun will look better if you cant enable light-bloom. This code only alters how the sun looks. Try it out but remember to backup your "suneffect.cfg" file.Dotsie.

Terrific! I've often thought the default sun with light bloom off could be greatly improved and now you've done it!Cheers,Noel.

My first thought, cool I can get those FPS back now!My second thought, how cool would it look WITH the bloom on in additions to your modifications?

This is very interesting!Jeff ShylukSenior Staff Reviewer, Avsim

Would it be worth posting this cfg file to the File Library so more people who can't use light-bloom can use it??? I still haven't finished testing it fully though.Dotsie.

Very nice tweak just when I thought whether something could be done about it. Super.! WOZhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/178975.jpg

I've been playing around with this now for a while and think I've found a satisfactory setting that gives enough radiance during the day without the sun lingering too long after sunset. I'll try upload it as a zip to library with the tweak config file and the original. Again it should be noted that this is for those who can't use light-bloom. The screenshot sky texture are also not the default.http://picasaweb.google.com/davidjamesbolg...169684764792018http://lh5.google.com/davidjamesbolger/Rxk...s/s800/comp.jpghttp://picasaweb.google.com/davidjamesbolg...169710534595810 http://lh3.google.com/davidjamesbolger/Rxk.../s800/comp1.jpgDotsie.

The suneffect.cfg entry sorry, forgot.Download: http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...isc&DLID=111198or copy & paste[general]SunSize=1100MoonSize=2072SunTexture="sun.bmp"LensFlareCount="10"RenderCorona="1"RenderGlow="1"RenderMoonCorona="1"[LensFlare.1]Texture="sunglow.bmp"Size="1.1"Location="1.00"Intensity="0.5"Sunglow="1"[LensFlare.2]Texture="corona1.bmp"Size="0.55"Location="1.00"Intensity="0.25"Corona="1"

Very nice Dotsie - works very well thank you.Hope you don't mind me posting this tweak on the Horizon Simulations forum...giving you full credit of naturally.

No I don't mind, I hope people like it as much as me. No need for credit if you want, I didn't create anything new.Dotsie.
