STAR Instructions too early

Recommended Posts

Hi Dave,

May have found an issue. I was executing a flight between CYYZ and KBOS and received the STAR instructions shortly after takeoff. I was still within the SID. I didn't get the climb step instructions. I executed the climb to FL390 regardless. ATC recovered and the rest of the flight was normal.

Here's what I think is the relevant parts of the log around the issue:

First the flight plan init:

Filed Route: CYYZ DIRECT BMPAH DIRECT AEVON DIRECT HANKK Q935 JOSSY Q935 AUDIL Q935 FABEN Q935 PONCT KBOS
Filed SID: KEPTA3 - RW23 - BMPAH
Filed STAR: JFUND2 - RW04R - PONCT
Filed APPR:
Filed APPR Trans:
Filed Cruise Alt: 39000
File Descent Rate: 1750
End FPLFile 10/21/2023 13:14:35

Now here's where the software thinks the STAR started:

Perhaps something to do with the cast exception. If you need more log let me know.

I see what happened, but no clue why.  ATC jumped to GGABE as the next waypoint, making it think it was late with giving STAR instructions, even though you were actually still climbing in the SID.

I suspect this was a one-off glitch.  Be sure to update to the latest Beta (7H at this point).

While this shouldn't happen again, if strange things like this happen, you can almost always recover by Disconnecting, then Reconnecting.  Then File the plan and make the initial call to the current controller like "<CallSign> climbing to xxxx" in a case like yours.

Thanks for the report.

Dave

I'm sort of new to this having used this software for about a month now. But I don't think this issue is a one-off glitch since it has happened to me also. Yesterday I got a clearance for final approach when I was still climbing to cruise 300 nm away. Yesterday I also got an approach clearance when I was 169 nm from the IAF and I was told to contact tower when I was 90 nm away.

That's the reason I'm searching this forum, to see if there are better answers.

Based on the description, it sounds like something happened on the flight that caused the program to think it was further along the route that it truly was.

If you email the log file for this flight to admin@p2atc.com, I can have a look.  Reference this thread so I'll know why you sent the log.
