April 29, 20242 yr We continue our flights in India. For this flight, we depart from Coimbatore (VOCB) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Coimbatore was ranked the best-emerging city in India by India Today in the 2014 annual survey, fourth among Indian cities in investment climate by Confederation of Indian Industry, and 17th among the top global outsourcing cities by Tholons. Coimbatore has been selected as one of the Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under the Smart Cities Mission and AMRUT by the Government of India. Coimbatore regularly features among the top ten best cities to live in India and is amongst the safest cities in India for women according to a National Crime Records Bureau report in 2015. We head west and reach Calicut (VOCL) in the state of Kerala. The town is now named Kozhikode and is the largest city on the Malabar Coast. It was ranked the second-best city in India to live in. After visiting the Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary we land at Kannur (VOKN). The Indian Naval Academy – the world’s third largest naval academy – is situated on the coast, not far from here. We follow the coast and reach our next landing at Mangalore (VOML). Mangalore or Mangaluru is a major port in the state of Karnataka. Mangalore is one of the fastest developing cities in India. Now we turn inland and land at Mysore (VOMY). As the traditional seat of the Wadiyar dynasty, the city functioned as the capital of the Kingdom of Mysore for almost six centuries (1399 to 1947). Known for its heritage structures, palaces (such as the famous Mysore Palace), and its culture, Mysore has been called the "City of Palaces", the "Heritage City", and the "Cultural Capital of Karnataka". It is one of the cleanest cities in India. Most of the city's development during modern times could be attributed to the maharajas of Mysore and the Wadiyar dynasty, who were patrons of art and culture. Hyder Ali and Tipu, when they were briefly in power in succession, also contributed significantly to the economic growth of the city and the kingdom by planting mulberry trees and silk in the region and fighting four wars against the British. In present days, the Mysore City Corporation is responsible for the civic administration of the city. During the Dasara festivals, Mysore receives hundreds of thousands of tourists from around the world. The city is also the namesake of various art forms and cultures, such as Mysore Dasara and Mysore painting. We head northeast and land at Kempegowda Intl (VOBL), serving the city and district of Bangalore. The city is the capital city of the state of Karnataka and is well known for its pleasant climate. It is India‘s third largest city and is nicknamed „Garden City“. We head further northeast and reach Tirupati (VOTP), in the state of Andhra Pradesh. About 50 miles southeast, at the Coromandel Coast, we reach Chennai (VOMM). The city was formerly known as Madras and is the capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu. As a gateway to South India, Chennai is among the most-visited Indian cities ranking 36th among the most-visited cities in the world in 2019. Chennai regularly features among the best cities to live in India and is amongst the safest cities in India. Chennai is a major center for medical tourism and is termed "India's health capital". Chennai houses a major portion of India's automobile industry, hence the name "Detroit of India". It was the only South Asian city to be ranked among National Geographic's "Top 10 food cities" in 2015 and was added to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) list.
