What would cause the CDI button to disappear from PFD

Recently during a flight in the Bonanza I noticed that the autopilot was not following the planned route. I then noticed that the CDI 'button' had 'disappeared' and the direction display was locked onto LOC1.

I tried quite a few things but could not change it from LOC1 to GPS.

What could have caused this?
