I have upgraded my old standby PC to W11 and not sure if I like it. However I know that W10 is no longer supported and so will do so soon. Did you have any problems during the upgrade especially with MSFS?

Please disregard. The desktop icon for MSFS2020 has changed WITHOUT me doing anything from a blank icon to one which displays a meaningful image. This happened 3 hours after the finish of reinstalling MSFS2020. Oh the joys of windows.

Unfortunately, recently I needed to do a Window 10 RESET which uninstalled MSFS2020. I have now reinstalled NSFS2020 however the desktop icon 'picture' is a very boring nothing. I have researched how to change and unfortunately in the windows change icon there are no images which even remotely look like an aircraft of even just the characters FS. I also have found on the internet that the files to change the icon picture need to be an exe file. Does anyone have a suitable file or knows how to convert a jpg files to an icon file and how to apply that to the desktop icon? Thanks

Administrator please REMOVE this post as my problem has been fixed. A windows RESET (I could not find a windows REPAIR, where has it gone?) and then a MSFS2020 reinstall (the Windows Reset removed my MSFS2020 installation Grrr).

Well after doing some research I decided to do a windows RESET (I really only wanted to do a windows REPAIR but could not find it) and that has fixed the problem of not being able to run XBOX - it seemed to reinstall W10? However it also removed my MSFS2020 installation and so I had to reinstall again (and repopulate the Community folder with my addons) and fix my user cockpit camera positions in those aircraft I had set up. How nice of Microsoft to remove MSFS2020 during a reset Grrrrrrrrr! I have been delaying the upgrade to W11 but now worry that during the upgrade MSFS2020 might get removed. Has anyone upgraded W10 to W11 and NOT affected MSFS2020?

Yes MSFS seems to require internet access but of a 'type' I don't know about as I was able to access web sites, email etc etc but could not open XBOX and could not run MSFS2020 as it requires authentication (which seems to be automatically done via XBOX) and if it can't authentical the user then it wants the disc inserted (I never knew that there was a disk version of MSFS2020). And so I always had internet access but only for web browsing. Something must have got screwed up in W10 as after doing a windows reset I then had access via XBOX. A question? Do all versions of MSFS2020 require installation of the XBOX app? I have now reinstalled MSFS2020 (by doing a Windows RESET it removed my MSFS2020 installation - oh how nice of Microsoft to do that Grrr) and it's now working ok however obviously I have to repopulate the Community folder with all my addons and reset user cockpit camera position for some aircraft Grrrr).

FYI, I found that I can open the XBOX app on my backup PC (not set up for MSFS2020) which has W11 installed (graded from W10 a few months ago just to 'have a look). That got me thinking and so I did a Windows RESET on my usual PC (could noy find a REPAIT option, what happened to it I wonder?). Well it took a long time but I can now open XBOX and so the problem was Windows related (boo hiss). Problem now is to set a few things up again including repositioning the dektop icons to suit myself ALSO I find that the existing icon for running MSFS2020 doesn't do anything. Any suggestions how to set it up again?

Thanks everyone. Wsreset didn't work as it requires you to have internet access. I decided to check my backup PC (my previous PC kept for emergencies which I upgraded to W11 a few months ago to see what W11 'looked like'). I was able to open the app XBOX which I couldn't using my 'normal' PC. That got me thinking. I then did a windows RESET on my 'normal' PC which took a long time but I can now open XBOX and so it seems it was a windows 'thing', maybe a corrupt file? I was hoping that there was a windows REPAIR but couldn't find it. I now have to restore a few things such as the location of my icons on the desktop screen and get MSFS2020 to do something as now when I double click the MSFS2020 icon nothing happens. Does anyone know what I should do to be able to run MSFS2020 again?

Is anyone able to run the store version of MSFS2020 with Windows 10? I am having trouble authenticating my copy (purchased years ago via the 'store' and wonder if it's because I am still using W10.

Today during a flight start in MSFS2020 I got a RED message of the screen to advise that internet connection was lost. I noted that the usual 'world map' showing possible start positions for the flight did not display. I thought little about it and continued on without problems. Later in the day I decided to startup MSFS2020 again I was then asked to insert a disk which I don't have as I have the Store version. I researched this and found some information. I also find that if I run XBOX it advises "look's like you are offline". When I open 'Network Settings' it advises "no internet access". I did a 'troubleshoot' which displays "possible solution:networking reset" I did the network reset and it made no difference. The strange thing is that I still seem to be connected to the internet as I still use all of my (3) browers and email clients. Any ideas? Somewhere else on the internet to ask this?

Thanks bailout. That is what I thought which is a pity as I do not find Discord to be particularly user friendly to use and I will now have to try and work out all the servers I had listed and join them again. I find that I cane select Manage/Switch accounts and I saw two previous accounts one of which would be the one I had been using. It my (feeble) attempts to work it through I accidentally (or otherwise) select LOG OUT to that one and it now isn't listed. Is there a method to attempt to login to that username? I tried uninstalling Discord (and erasing the folder on the C drive (users/myname/appdata etc) and reinstalling thinking that it would then allow me to enter the username for login but it didn't (user unfriendly?). And thanks Monica (in beautiful sunny southern California, LA?). I will try those links.

Thanks David, I didn't know that a browser was associated with Discord as it is run externally from a browser.

Thanks. My saved passwords lost - I did a cleanup using Ashampoo Winoptimiser and selected clear Browsing Traces which it seems and I have found that it must also clear out all the saved passwords - those which automatically are inserted from the Windows System. My mobile phone number doesn't exist because when my wife died I decided to use her phone and close my phone's plan and phone number as it was more expensive than my wife's phone plan. My ISP decided to close down its email service so that email address also 'died'. I thought that I had updated all my mobile phone numbers on bank accounts etc but forgot that it was also on my Discord account. I will try your suggestion re recover but have doubts it will work. All my saved passwords were erased. Now when I attempt to login Discord I can't because I have forgotten my password. And I can't request it to be reset as the email address I used when creating my account does not exist anymore - the isp doesn't exist anymore AND My mobile phone number doesn't exist anymore. I have searched everywhere to find a way to contact Discord but could not find one. I had a lot of servers 'attached' to my account with chats on many which I would like to continue with. Any ideas?

I posted this subject some weeks ago and received suggestions ranging from it will go away after a few MSFS startups to it will disappear after the next MSFS2020 upgrade. Well both have now happened. There was an update in the last 24 hours and I must have started MSFS 50 times (I am developing some scenery) since then . Everytime I start a flight the XBox controller displays while the flight loads. I know that this is just nuisance value but it never used to happen since I purchased MSFS2020. Now I am wondering could something have been triggered by the fact that I ran MSFS2020 from the XBox app just before this started to happen. I usually start it from a desktop icon which 'uses' MSGAME LAUNCH however at the time I was having problems with MSFS2020 and XBox as MSFS2020 often was telling me to "insert disk" and when I opened XBox it displayed that I was offline yet I could access any web site using any internet browser. In frustration I decided to try running MSFS2020 from XBox. Could that have set a flag or something which is causing the XBox controller to display on screen? If so what is the fix, and I am hoping its not an uninstall/reinstall? Thanks.

Well it is now two weeks since I encountered this problem and would have started FS2020 at least 20 times yet the XBox controller has not disappeared as many suggested that it would. I know that it is only a nuisance but as it never displayed in the previous 5 years it annoyed me. I now wonder if it is displayed because I started MSFS2020 from the XBox app over 2 weeks ago (I did this as MSFS2020 was regularly not starting and after researching found that XBox was displaying that I was off line and when I clicked on the 'network status' it also displayed that my network was offline yet the same 'network status' run from Windows started that I was online - how can this show opposing info?). Anyway could my 'problem be caused by running MSFS2020 from the XBox app instead of from the desktop icon and if so how do I undo this?

Thanks for your assistance however that did not fix the issue. I tried toggling twice and then I even tried setting it to 'legacy' without any luck (|with apply and save of course). I think the only way to get rid of it (unless there is a 'hot line' to the powers that be which I could ask) is to uninstall and reinstall MSFS2020. Grrr!!!

Where do you mean? I cant find this either in MSFS or Xbox.

This all started after I was having trouble with 2020 asking me to insert disk during startup and I read somewhere about the Xbox app which I ran and it displayed that I was offline yet I could access any website via any web browser. Anyway I clicked on something in Xbox which fixed my problem but resulted in the display of the Xbox controller. Sometimes I really hate Asobo!

After problems with Xbox not finding that I was online I did a RESET which has put all my setups back to defaults (unfortunately) and when MSFS2020 first started up after the reset it showed ASSISTs settings (only for the first startup) however I now find that an image of an Xbox controller unit is displayed during startup. NO big deal I guess but just wondering if there is a setting to prevent this displaying. Here is a screen shot of what I mean -

Hi Bill, That didn't work. Once again today MSFS tells me to insert disk. I open XBOX and it displays that I am offline yet I can connect to any web site using any web browser. I did the CMD command and then MSFS automatically started but once again "please insert disk" and XBOX displays that I am offline. I also rebooted my router and PC. I started XBOX which again displayed that I was offline. I then clicked on MSFS2020 within XBOX exited XBOX and restarted XBOX and it then didn't display that I was offline and I was able to start MSFS2020 which started at Accessibility Settings (never seen that before) and I clicked on Next and MSFS2020 continued to start up but of course I have lost all my settings and will have to set them up AGAIN (and I can't remember how I set up my joystick buttons)! This has been happening for the last 2 or 3 weeks the first time I run MSFS2020 on any day. Could it be caused by not exiting MSFS 'nicely' ie sometimes I just click on the exit (X) on top of screen (I have developer mode on) to exit instead of going back to the 'exit to Desktop' button? I am fast becoming 'over' Microsoft, Asobo or whoever is causing this problem and asking myself should I go back to XPlane which never gave me any problems.

Thanks Bill. I found it quite strange that rebooting my PC fixed the problem. Also I think, repeat think, that each time the problem occurred I may have started another app as MSFS2020 was starting up as I often start up an online Bridge game to fill in time as MSFS2020 starts. Could that cause problems?

The last few times I have attempted to run MSFS2020 (over the last 2-3 weeks) I get a message to insert disk. I run Xbox and it tells me that I am offline, yet I can access websites through 3 different web browsers and all the relevant lights on my router are lit. Rebooting the router makes no difference. The only way I can get connected with 2020 is to reboot my PC. What could the problem be and what is the fix? [added later] And now I find that all my settings have been set back to default. So annoying. Would this have been the result of the last upgrade? Does this sort of thing happens after (some) 2024 upgrades? Regards John

I have done everything suggested above. When I set graphics to 'windows' and save it, if I exit MSFS2020 and restart immediately, windows mode is retained. If I don't use MSFS2020 for some time and then restart it has reverted to full screen. I am sure that someone once mentioned something else so that windowed mode is retained regardless of how long it was between setting it and restarting MSFS2020

I thought that I had asked this question some time ago however a search by author (me) didn't find a post. I noticed that when I select 'windowed mode', when I exit MSFS2020 and start again it it is 'full screen mode'/ What setting do I use to make it 'stick' Thanks
